The fashion and costume designer Giorgio Armani has pᴀssed away at the age of 91. Known as Italy’s fashion king, Armani also worked in the world of cinema, famously designing costumes for movies including American Gigolo, Elysium, and the Christopher Nolan movie The Dark Knight.
He founded the luxury fashion house and company Armani, which now also has stakes in music, sport, and H๏τels, in 1975 with his partner Sergio Galeotti, who died of complications from AIDS in 1985. The company has since risen to become Italy’s third-biggest fashion group after Gucci (which was founded in 1921) and Prada (which was founded in 1913).
Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, there had been concerns about Giorgio Amarni’s health following his absence from two Armani shows at Milan Fashion Week in June, and he died on Thursday after a short illness. He was at home and his family was present at the time. His death was later confirmed by various media outlets in Italy.
Giorgio Armani’s Career On Screen
Although Armani was best known for his work in the fashion industry, he dedicated a great deal of his attention to cinematic costumes over the years. Many of his contributions were to Italian тιтles in a wide variety of genres, including the Dario Argento horror movie Phenomena and Marco Bellocchio’s erotic thriller Devil in the Flesh.
Dario Argento, who is considered one of the Masters of Horror, directed influential horror films including 1975’s Deep Red and 1977’s Suspiria.
However, his work extended to many American projects across genres and time periods. This included providing wardrobe for the 1987 Brian De Palma movie The Untouchables and Walter Hill’s 1984 crime drama Streets of Fire.
Armani also provided costumes for specific stars, characters, and scenes over the course of his career. In addition to making Bruce Wayne’s tailored outfits in The Dark Knight, he provided Brad Pitt’s eveningwear in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, Jodie Foster’s costumes in Elysium, and Samuel L. Jackson’s wardrobe in Death to 2020.
Giorgio Armani Will Be Remembered As A Fashion Icon
Thanks to his contributions to the world of fashion, the name Armani has become more or less synonymous with luxury. He and his fashion house have been referenced just as many movies and television shows as the ones he directly contributed to, including the NBC sitcom The Office and Frasier, as well as the Adam Sandler movie Click.
In The Office, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) misquotes a line from The Devil Wears Prada during a season 4 episode where he asks Pam to call Armani.
Giorgio Armani will be warmly remembered by his friends, family, and admirers. The legacy he leaves behind via his designs, his company, and his contributions to cinema will continue to live on, cementing his long-earned status as a тιтan of the fashion industry.
