Francis Ford Coppola’s Infamous $14.4M Sci-Fi Epic Movie Is Finally Coming To VOD One Year Later

A Francis Ford Coppola sci-fi movie that was an infamous box office disappointment has set a new VOD premiere date after previously being pulled from its digital release. Coppola is one of the most respected filmmakers of the modern age and has been nominated for 14 Oscars, winning five (for Patton, The Godfather, and The Godfather Part II).

Together, Francis Ford Coppola movies have grossed more than $950 million worldwide. However, while hits such as The Godfather and his 1992 Dracula adaptation grossed more than $200 million apiece, he has had some notable misfires, including his 1982 musical One from the Heart and his recent sci-fi epic that stumbled in theaters.

Megalopolis Is Returning To VOD

2024’s Megalopolis is finally returning to VOD. The sci-fi epic, which was a longtime pᴀssion project of Francis Ford Coppola’s, was written by Coppola and starred Adam Driver as architect Cesar, who fights to defend his vision against establishment powers. It also starred Giancarlo Esposito, Aubrey Plaza, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Shia LaBeouf, Laurence Fishburne, Talia Shire, and Dustin Hoffman.

The reported budget of Megalopolis was a whopping $136 million, including roughly $120 million of Coppola’s own money. However, the movie was a theatrical disappointment, only grossing $14.3 million worldwide, which was a total that saw it falling below other low-performing 2024 тιтles including Better Man, The Crow, Robert Zemeckis’ Here, Borderlands, and Harold and the Purple Crayon.

While the movie originally debuted on premium video-on-demand in November 2024, it disappeared in early 2025. The Hollywood Reporter reported that it was Coppola’s intention for the movie to only be available in theaters.

However, Apple TV‘s listing for the movie now says that Megalopolis is expected to arrive on the platform on Thursday, September 4. It remains to be seen if the movie will be available for purchase or rental elsewhere on the same date, but it is currently not listed on other major VOD platforms, including Prime Video and Fandango at Home.

What This Means For Megalopolis

It ultimately seems unlikely that the movie’s availability on VOD will substantially increase its chances of turning a profit against its huge budget. Negative Megalopolis reviews (on Rotten Tomatoes, it has earned 45% from critics and 34% from audiences) will probably continue to plague the project’s chances of connecting with widespread viewers.

However, the fact that Megalopolis will once more be available on digital platforms could be considered a win for the movie. While it is unclear how Francis Ford Coppola feels about this development, the fact that the project can continue to be discovered by new audiences will most likely only benefit it and help it develop a cult following.
