Popular Action Star, 35, Isn’t Confirmed For 28 Years Later Sequel, So Will He Return?

Anticipation is high for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, but will Aaron Taylor-Johnson, one of the most popular stars in the first movie, return? In 28 Years Later, Taylor-Johnson plays Jamie, Spike’s father. During the first act of the movie, the two of them embark on a mission to the mainland so that Spike can kill his first infected.

Taylor-Johnson is surprisingly sidelined for the rest of 28 Years Later. After seeing Jamie cheat on his sick mother, Spike decides to take her to the mainland to try to seek medical attention. At the end of 28 Years Later, Jamie receives a note (and a human child) from his son, which informs him that he won’t be returning to Holy Island anytime soon.

Many characters from 28 Years Later will return in the upcoming sequel, such as Spike, Dr. Kelson, and the villainous Jimmy Crystal. However, it’s worth noting that Jamie doesn’t appear at all in the trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. This raises a major question about the star’s involvement.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Jamie Is Not Confirmed To Appear In 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

Even though Jamie was one of the most important characters in the new trilogy’s first movie, he hasn’t been confirmed to appear in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Neither the director, Nia DaCosta, nor any of the movie’s producers has ever confirmed that Taylor-Johnson will appear in the sequel.

Additionally, his name isn’t included in the credited cast in the description of the trailer. The only actors credited in this list are Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Chi Lewis-Parry. The official cast list suggests that Taylor-Johnson is not in the movie.

However, it should be noted that Cillian Murphy is also left off the cast list even though he is confirmed to appear in the movie.

This leaves two possibilities. Either Taylor-Johnson is in the movie and the studio just hasn’t felt the need to confirm his return, or he has been intentionally left out of the second installment. But, the current evidence points against Taylor-Johnson making a surprise appearance in the sequel.

Holy Island, where Jamie and Spike are from, isn’t shown at all in the trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. This is somewhat surprising, since it was a very important location in the first movie. It seems like the sequel will instead remain on the mainland and focus on characters like Spike, Dr. Kelson, Samson, and Jimmy’s cult, who appeared at the end of the first film.

If Holy Island isn’t included at all in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, then there’s a chance that Taylor-Johnson will be left out of the movie. However, based on the ending of the first film, it wouldn’t be surprising if Jamie travels to the mainland eventually, allowing him to have a cameo too.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson Will Return In A 28 Years Later Sequel, Even If Not In The Bone Temple

Jamie’s return in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple might not be confirmed, but his future with the franchise is.

At the end of 28 Years Later, Jamie rushes into the waters that surround Holy Island, heartbroken that his son is not returning after receiving his note and the uninfected human baby, setting up more for his story.

Taylor-Johnson himself has even discussed what fans can expect from Jamie in 28 Years Later sequels. Despite his questionable actions in the first film, the actor believes that Jamie truly cares a lot about both Spike and Isla. Therefore, after receiving Spike’s letter at the end of the film, Jamie will likely be seeking redemption. Taylor-Johnson said:

I guess you don’t really get to see a sense of that, right? I think there’s a lot of fear and guilt and a sense of he’s lost control. He’s a character who very much feels like he’s in control and he’s found a purpose on this island, on this Holy Island within this community. He’s a bit of a warrior, someone who goes out to the mainland. He’s very useful in what he does. But yes, I think his son means everything to him and I think his wife does too, but I think he’s very much in denial of her condition and I think he maybe put a bit too much pressure and projected a lot onto his son. I think once he loses control, I think he is in a place where he probably wants to somehow redeem that. I don’t want to give any spoilers [for the next movie], but I don’t if he’s yet to kind of get there in that bit because Spike goes on and he takes the lead in what he needs to do for his mother.

These comments seemingly confirm that Jamie will indeed return at some point in the trilogy. Initially, since he survived the events of 28 Years Later, many fans expected him to appear in The Bone Temple. However, since he was left out of the trailer, perhaps Jamie’s redemption arc is being saved for the trilogy’s third movie.

At this point, the third movie in the 28 Years Later trilogy is not officially confirmed. However, Boyle is hoping that 28 Years Later’s story and Murphy’s appearance at the end of The Bone Temple will convince the studio to greenlight the project. That’s more likely after 28 Years Later‘s box office success.

If Taylor-Johnson doesn’t show up in The Bone Temple, there must be a plan for him to be in the third 28 Years Later movie. If you are a fan of the character and Taylor-Johnson, there is no reason to worry. Jamie’s story will continue at some point, whether in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple or the next film.
