28 Years Later: Bone Temple Trailer Reveals Returning Characters & Sir Jimmy’s Brutal Cult

The trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has arrived. The movie, which is set to debut in theaters on January 16, 2026, is the fourth installment in the post-apocalyptic horror franchise 28 Days Later and a direct sequel to 28 Years Later, which saw original director Danny Boyle and original screenwriter Alex Garland reunite.

The upcoming 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was helmed by Nia DaCosta (Candyman) from another screenplay by Garland. It features returning Years cast members including Alfie Williams as Spike, Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, Ralph Fiennes as Dr Ian Kelson, and Jack O’Connell as Sir Jimmy Crystal, alongside Cillian Murphy as his original 28 Days Later character, Jim.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has now unveiled the first official trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The trailer opens with an old-fashioned recording pontificating about the futility of trying to predict the future, showing a train full of people before cutting to the same train, now empty and deserted after the Rage virus has devastated the British Isles.

The beginning of the trailer largely focuses on Dr. Kelson, following him as he uses a hand-cranked generator in his living quarters and seems to recognize a hint of humanity in the Alpha Infected, Samson (Chi Lewis-Parry). The second half of the trailer focuses more on Sir Jimmy and his cult, who wear strange masks and tie up prisoners.

The two threads come together when Jimmy Ink (Erin Kellyman) spots Dr. Kelson and the cult invades his bone temple. One of the final sH๏τs sees Sir Jimmy asking a terrified-looking Spike “are you ready?” Watch the full trailer below:

What This Means For 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

This trailer seems to imply that, even though the new 28 Years Later movie has a different director, it will still utilize a filmmaking approach that features a collage of old-fashioned images and recordings from Britain’s past, just like its immediate predecessor.

28 Years Later heavily featured Taylor Holmes’ eerie 1915 recording of the Rudyard Kipling poem “Boots,” alongside old war footage.

Additionally, as the ending of 28 Years Later suggested, Spike will soon learn of the wickedness of Sir Jimmy and his cult. Although his expression in the trailer implied that he wants to get away from them, as their power and influence grows, he may find himself caught in the middle of whatever takes place between them and Dr. Kelson.

Our Take On The 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Trailer

Overall, the trailer for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple shows that the sequel is continuing to evoke the same tone as its predecessor, focusing on interpersonal interactions rather than full-on post-apocalyptic horror. However, it seems that Sir Jimmy and his cult members will nevertheless amp up the horror side of the equation as much as possible.
