“Everyone Will Be Blown Away”: Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom Hyped By Avengers: Doomsday Star

Avengers: Doomsday will feature Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom in his biggest Marvel Cinematic Universe role yet, and fans are not prepared for him, at least according to one Marvel star. Downey first appeared as Victor von Doom in The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ mid-credits scene. However, his face was not visible, with shadows only leaving Doom’s costume to be seen.

Downey is expected to lead Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast in the same way that Josh Brolin’s Thanos was the effective main character of 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, despite the high number of heroes involved. At this moment, little is known about what to expect from Avengers: Doomsday‘s story, but a returning MCU star has taken time to hype up RDJ’s Doctor Doom.

Speaking with The River, Shang-Chi actor Simu Liu teased what Robert Downey Jr. brings to the table as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. According to the Marvel star, Downey will blow everyone away with the way he plays Victor von Doom in the upcoming MCU movie. Liu also noted how the actor was integral to Marvel’s success. Check out the full quote below:

“He’s been an integral part of Marvel’s success and has been in so many films over the years, yet he still takes the time to meet and connect with so many people. Because he’s played such a diverse range of roles, I think everyone will be blown away by the way he tackles this new character in this film.”

While Simu Liu’s new Avengers: Doomsday comments do not share new information about Doctor Doom’s story in the Marvel movie, the tease that fans will be blown away by the way Downey tackles the MCU villain is exciting. After Jonathan Majors was fired from the franchise, Marvel chose to abandon its plans for Kang the Conqueror.

With multiple projects in the Multiverse Saga focusing on setting up Kang and his variants, that was quite the move. If there was one villain to replace him, it certainly was Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom divided opinions. On the one hand, his talent is undeniable. On the other hand, his past as Iron Man makes the situation confusing.

Liu’s comments about how RDJ’s Doctor Doom is shaping up to be an impressive turn from the actor help ease any concerns from those who were unsure about how moving from Iron Man to the villain would work out for Downey. The Shang-Chi star noted the “diverse range of roles” Downey has played, teasing a new version of the actor as the character.

While the fact that Robert Downey Jr. played Iron Man led to many Doctor Doom theories, some of which fans are not very fond of, the star has shown his skills at playing villains and antagonists multiple times. After all, he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his work as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer.

That said, Simu Liu’s new Avengers: Doomsday comments should help those still on the fence about Downey’s ability to play Doctor Doom. Liu has been filming the MCU movie with the actor, seeing day-to-day what he can bring to the table as Doctor Doom. With the Shang-Chi star excited about RDJ’s performance, Avengers: Doomsday can’t come soon enough.
