DC’s Next Wonder Woman Movie: Everything Announced By James Gunn From Recasting To More

The new DC Universe will feature a Wonder Woman movie that changes the game for the hero in live-action, as new details have recently been revealed after a long wait. Gal Gadot played Wonder Woman in the DCEU movie franchise. While characters like Henry Cavill’s Superman went missing for years between projects, Gadot’s Diana Prince remained a recurring DCEU player.

For instance, she appeared in a cameo role in two of the DCEU’s final movies, 2023’s The Flash and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. While Wonder Woman 1984 was a disappointment, with just $169.6 million worldwide and a 57% Rotten Tomatoes score, Gadot’s take on the character was mostly beloved. As such, the reveal that Wonder Woman 3 was scrapped was surprising.

Gadot had even commented on how she would work on a third Wonder Woman movie with DC Studios’ new co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, which was later debunked by multiple reports. The entire cast of the DCEU’s Justice League will see their roles played by new actors in the DCU’s upcoming projects. That includes a new Wonder Woman being cast.

The DCU Wonder Woman Movie Is Finally Happening

When Gunn announced the first few movies and series in the DCU Chapter One, “Gods and Monsters,” there were films for two-thirds of DC’s Trinity. David Corenswet’s Superman has already led his DCU solo movie, while Batman’s The Brave and the Bold film remains in development at the studio. Sadly, a Wonder Woman movie was nowhere to be seen.

That has recently changed in a major way. James Gunn has confirmed that a Wonder Woman movie is not only part of the plan for the DCU Chapter One, but it is already being written. Since the announcement, a report from Variety updated the status of the movie. DC is said to be fast-tracking the DCU Wonder Woman movie.

In the lead-up to Peacemaker season 2, Gunn has been commenting on events that happened in season 1 of the live-action DC show. That led to Gunn addressing Wonder Woman and The Flash’s DCU canon status. According to the franchise’s creative mastermind, they’ll eventually enter the DCU, but whether they were active during Peacemaker season 1 remains to be seen.

Besides confirming that a Wonder Woman movie is in development for the new DCU, Gunn also revealed who is penning the highly anticipated project. In charge of writing the Wonder Woman film script is Ana Nogueira, who is no stranger to DC. Nogueira joined DC Studios as the screenwriter of next year’s Supergirl, based on the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comics.

DC is happy with how Supergirl is shaping up. That led to Nogueira being attached to the DCU’s Teen тιтans movie. In February, Gunn confirmed Nogueira was writing Teen тιтans, which was in its early stages. Since then, Gunn has revealed that her script for Teen тιтans does not exist, as Nogueira had been attached to Wonder Woman, the studio’s priority, for some time.

While the DCU Wonder Woman movie was not part of the franchise’s initial slate reveal, a prequel series was announced. That is HBO’s Paradise Lost, which takes place way before Wonder Woman’s story and explores the rich mythos of the Amazons of Themyscira. The project is said to be similar in tone to Game of Thrones, with great political intrigue.

After the project was announced, development seemed to have stalled on Paradise Lost. However, the Wonder Woman prequel series received a positive update in March. According to Gunn, “Paradise Lost is totally still important,” with the development of the project going well. Peter Safran claimed the pilot was being written at the time. The Wonder Woman prequel series is moving along.

Who Could Play The DCU Wonder Woman?

At the moment, an actress has yet to be cast to play the DCU Wonder Woman. What is known is that Gal Gadot will not be coming back to reprise her role as Diana Prince in the new iteration of the DC franchise. With the role vacant, a few actresses have emerged as fan-favorites for the DCU Wonder Woman.

Popular names include Alexandra Daddario, Adria Arjona, and Ana de Armas. While there is no set timeline for when the new Wonder Woman will be cast, DC Studios has a rule in place. The core idea is to cast roles once the scripts for projects are finished. If the script is set by the end of 2025, Wonder Woman could be cast in 2026.

When Could The DCU Wonder Woman Movie Be Released?

James Gunn has revealed that once DC is happy with the scripts for the DCU Wonder Woman movie and Batman’s The Brave and the Bold, the studio will “go to production immediately.” Based on that, if Ana Nogueira is able to finish the DCU Wonder Woman movie’s script by the end of the year, the film could enter production in 2026.

DC has a rule of two live-action movies per year. 2026 will feature Supergirl and Clayface. 2027 has The Batman 2 and a vacant slot. A reported Deathstroke/Bane movie and the Superman sequel of sorts that Gunn has already written a lengthy treatment for could stand in Wonder Woman’s path. That said, a 2027 or 2028 release for DCU Wonder Woman is possible.
