All Rom-Com Fans Should Watch This Underrated 2000s Movie That’s A Blast From Start To Finish

Far too often, romantic comedies get released and are overlooked by a lot of people, even when they’re better than critics give them credit for. While some of these are still ultimately box office successes that many couples rush to theaters to see, they can still be unjustly forgotten once that theater run is over.

That was the case with 2009’s Couples Retreat, a romantic comedy featuring multiple relationships at the center. The film did well commercially upon release, grossing over $170 million, but critics were very harsh on it. It holds a lackluster 10% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which likely plays a factor in why it doesn’t get talked about much anymore.

Plenty of other romantic comedies feature members of this film’s cast have gone on to become staples of the genre that get rewatched over and over. Despite that, Couples Retreat is only starting to hit that level and it’s a shame because it’s actually a blast.

Couples Retreat Is A Really Fun Rom-Com

Although critics didn’t appreciate Couples Retreat, it holds up pretty well as a fun rom-com, and sometimes, that’s all a viewer needs. We don’t always put a film on to see a true classic or something groundbreaking. The entire premise of Couples Retreat is designed for that, centering on four couples who go on vacation together.

That is enough to guaranatee the wacky shenanigans that the genre is known for at times. The couples all have different problems going on in their relationships, even some that they aren’t aware of, which come out during mandatory group therapy sessions.

That sets the tone for scenes that are just a joy to watch including the inappropriate yoga sessions and the animal spirit token at the end of the therapy sessions. These are the things that critics might not enjoy but it’s perfect for people wanting to have a good time, especially upon repeat viewings.

The Cast Of Couples Retreat Is Tremendous

While the antics are a big part of why Couples Retreat works so well, the real driving force is the incredible cast. The likes of Kristen Bell, Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, and Kristin Davis are rom-com veterans who are hilarious here, while Jon Favreau and Malin Akerman bring some of the biggest laughs of their careers.

The scene stealers are Faizon Love and Kali Hawk as a couple of polar opposites in terms of their interests and ages. The concept of their relationship and the performances by the actors make for the film’s funniest moments. Those eight main actors also share strong chemistry altogether.

There’s also a strong supporting cast featuring Temura Morrison, Ken Jeong, Amy Hill, and Jean Reno. The highlights of the supporting cast are Peter Serafinowicz as Sctanley (pronounced Stanley) and Carlos Ponce as a flirty yoga instructor, all coming together to make Couples Retreat an absolute blast.
