Disney announces a new magical movie coming to theaters next year. After the releases of Elio, Lilo & Sтιтch, and Snow White this year, the company will next bring forth Pixar’s Zootopia 2 in November. Disney’s next year’s slate by far features a Toy Story sequel and a Moana live-action adaptation.

At D23, Disney announced a new original project from the Walt Disney Animation Studios. тιтled Hexed, the new movie will be theatrically released next fall. At the event, the animated project is described to be about a teenage oddball and his mother, who discover his weirdness as a hidden magic that holds the key to a realm where magic could run free.

The studio also released a short clip, teasing the shimmering green logo while confirming its release window. Another post offered a sneak peek at the teenage protagonist and his Type-A mom, who discovered his magic powers. Check out Disney’s announcement below:

What This Means For Disney’s Upcoming Slate

At D23, Disney also offered an update on several of its upcoming тιтles. The highly anticipated Ice Age sequel now only has an official тιтle, Ice Age: Boiling Point, but a confirmed release date of February 5, 2027. Meanwhile, Pixar will release an original animated film Hoppers in 2026, while Toy Story 5 and Gatto will come to theaters in 2027.

Incredibles 3 and Coco 2 have been scheduled for 2028 and beyond. While the studio has several remakes in the works, Hexed is currently the only announced original movie from Walt Disney Animation Studios to arrive in 2026 so far. Its joining also means next year will be less remake-heavy for the studio.

Moana 2 marked Disney’s latest original animated feature film. Released in 2024, the movie achieved major box office success, having grossed over $1 billion during its theatrical run. While the studio’s 2023 original release, Wish, was a flop, the 2021 Encanto became a word-of-mouth phenomenon on Disney+.

Our Take On Disney’s New Original Movie

Hexed follows a similar tried-and-succeeded format as seen in several of Disney’s original animated movies. Tackling family dynamics while telling a story about magic and the coming-of-age experience, the studio’s next original movie is visually appealing and thematically intriguing.

Hexed will join several original animated movies to arrive in theaters in 2026. In addition to Hoppers, DreamWorks will release Forgotten Island, while Nickelodeon’s The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender is expected to arrive some time next year.

The Travis Knight-directed dark fantasy film, Wildwood, also has a release time of 2026. Meanwhile, Sony is launching Goat, an animated sports comedy about an animal who joins a basketball league.
