Squid Game Star’s New Crime Movie Becomes Oscar Favorite With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score

A new movie featuring one of the stars of Squid Game has earned a solid Rotten Tomatoes score. Squid Game is a South Korean series that follows a tournament where desтιтute people compete in ᴅᴇᴀᴅly children’s games. It’s one of the most popular Netflix originals of all time, with season 1 being the streamer’s most-watched season ever, in any language.

The Squid Game cast is a robust ensemble, though the story’s life-and-death stakes mean that only a few stars have appeared in all three seasons. They include Lee Jung-jae as Player 456, Wi Ha-joon as Detective Hwang Jun-ho, Lee Seo-hwan as Player 390, and Lee Byung-hun as The Front Man.

No Other Choice Has Debuted On Rotten Tomatoes

No Other Choice has bowled over critics during its premiere. The new Park Chan-wook movie stars Lee Byung-hun as You Man-su, a man who loses his job after two and a half decades and takes desperate measures to keep himself afloat. The ensemble cast also includes Son Ye-jin, Lee Sung-min, Cha Seung-won, Park Hee-soon, and Yeom Hye-ran.

The South Korean movie has already been picked up for distribution in North America by Neon, the same company that brought Bong Joon Ho’s Best Picture winner Parasite to domestic theaters in 2019.

No Other Choice does not yet have an official domestic release date. However, the movie had its world premiere on August 29 at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it is in compeтιтion for the Golden Lion against other movies including Noah Baumbach’s Jay Kelly, Olivier ᴀssayas’ The Wizard of the Kremlin, and Kathryn Bigelow’s A House of Dynamite.

Rotten Tomatoes has now aggregated enough reviews for No Other Choice for it to earn an official score on the Tomatometer. While the score could fluctuate as more reviews are added, 11 critics have weighed in so far, giving the movie a perfect score of 100%.

Additionally, the movie is scoring high with individual reviewers, with the most common score being 4 out of 5. It has also received scores of A- and 9 out of 10, with critics praising its deft blend of genres, Lee Byung-hun’s complex performance, and Park Chan-wook’s exquisite filmmaking.

What This Means For No Other Choice

This score could position No Other Choice as a strong Oscar contender, especially if it wins the Golden Lion. This could put it on a similar path to 2019’s Parasite, which earned a 99% score and won the Palme d’Or at Cannes before Neon distributed in the U.S. and it went on to win four Oscars, including Best Picture.

This is yet another win for Lee Byung-hun. The Squid Game star has already achieved streaming success, with all three seasons of the series topping the chart of Netflix’s most watched non-English series. However, No Other Choice‘s current trajectory could bring him to an even higher level of international renown.
