Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Could Have A Clever Loophole For The Franchise’s Growing Problem

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is expected to heavily focus on Amy Rose and Metal Sonic as the new additions to the franchise. Still, the upcoming sequel has the opportunity to introduce several additional classic Sonic characters alongside the ones teased during Sonic 3’s post-credits.

Sonic 4 is still a ways away, so specific details about the characters or plot are very few and far between. However, the idea that the movie could introduce even more brand-new characters to the franchise is slightly worrying, because the Sonic movies’ character problem has been a growing issue with each new addition.

However, if Sonic 4 does end up introducing more characters beyond Amy and Metal, there is a way to do it that will avoid making the series’ issues worse. It could even bring the movies closer to the video games, and make the franchise feel more faithful to the series that inspired it.

Sonic 4 Establishing Team Rose Would Bring In Some Lesser-Known Video Game Characters

Team Rose was a team established by Amy in the 2003 video game Sonic Heroes, and consists of Amy, Big the Cat, and Cream the Rabbit. They haven’t been a huge part of the games, only appearing occasionally throughout the franchise’s long history, and never really being the central focus of the game they appear in.

In Sonic Heroes, Team Rose worked alongside Team Sonic, Team Dark, and Team Chaotix in order to beat Neo Metal Sonic.

With that being said, it would be great to introduce the team to Sonic 4 for multiple reasons. Chiefly, it would make a lot of sense for Amy to have some sort of team behind her. Her introduction at the end of Sonic 3 could be altered to reveal that she had a full team supporting her efforts.

Introducing Team Rose would also help to sidestep the character problem that the Sonic franchise is currently seeing. The movies have introduced enough characters at this point that they can’t possibly give them all a satisfying story within the runtime of a single movie.

While adding even more characters to the series might seem counterintuitive, as they already have too many, it could set a precedent for a better way to introduce them. Big and Cream don’t have as much going on as Knuckles or Shadow, so they could simply be slotted in as minor side characters, only showing up for a few scenes.

So far, the Sonic franchise has only used classic Sonic characters as the backbone of a film, which has led to them feeling less important as more movies come out. If characters like Big are put in without too much fanfare, they will simply feel like a natural extension of the world. Their lack of importance to the central plot won’t be unsatisfying.

These characters probably wouldn’t be able to headline a film themselves, but they still deserve to be introduced in the series. Using them in this way, with small parts in movies where they aren’t main characters, would allow Sonic the Hedgehog 4, as well as future projects, to add more characters without adding more problems.
