The latest look at Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia was just released online, leading to rampant speculation about what appears to be Emma Stone’s new haircut. Appearing in the second trailer for Bugonia, the footage shows off some more of the film’s story alongside several stylistic sequences set to Chappell Roan’s hit song “Good Luck, Babe!”.
Lanthimos has a history of making unusual films, and Bugonia looks to be no exception. Capturing the energy of some of Lanthimos’ best movies, the new film sees Emma Stone’s Michelle, a high-powered executive in the tech world, kidnapped by a pair of conspiracy theorists who believe her to be an alien.
The film is a remake of the 2003 South Korean film Save the Green Planet! And it features a strong supporting cast, including Jesse Plemons and Alicia Silverstone. With the potential to be one of Emma Stone’s best movies as well, there has been some wonder about whether Stone really shaved her head for the role.
Yes, Emma Stone Went Bald For Bugonia & It Was Emotional For Her
Emma Stone shaved her head for Bugonia, and it has been a unique and stirring experience for the La La Land star.
Many have speculated that the look could have been created with a convincing bald cap and makeup, similar to the process for Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. However, it has since been revealed that, despite Jennifer Lawrence trying to convince Stone otherwise, her look in the film is all natural.
Revealed in Vogue, a scene in the film where Stone’s character’s abductors shave her head in the back of a car is real. This sequence is intense, and the trailer reveals that the motivation behind it is that her captors believe her hair helps her connect to her alien cohorts.
Stone responded mostly positively to the haircut, although there was a very emotional component. The experience reminded her of how her mother, Krista, had to shave her head during breast cancer treatment several years ago. “She actually did something brave… I’m just shaving my head,” Stone told Vogue.
Still, even with some tears around the experience, Stone loved how the haircut felt. “The first shower when you’ve shaved your head? Oh my God, it’s amazing,” she said. Still, she didn’t show off the look much, wearing wigs and hats in public as her hair began to grow back.
The look is a strong one for Stone, but it does not appear she plans to keep it. Fortunately, her commitment to the new Lanthimos project did allow her to embrace the style for the strange film. Emma Stone’s shaved head is a shocking look, and it will factor significantly into Bugonia’s story when the film releases this year.
