A Twilight star pushes for a prequel movie based on their controversial Cullen character, believing “that there is a possibility of redemption.” The franchise spans five films – Twilight (2008), New Moon (2009), Eclipse (2010), Breaking Dawn – Part 1 (2011), and Breaking Dawn – Part 2 (2012) – which feature a cast led by Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen.
Across five films, Twilight‘s cast includes several other Cullen characters, including Peter Facinelli as Carlisle Cullen, Elizabeth Reaser as Esme Cullen, Ashley Greene as Alice Cullen, and Kellan Lutz as Emmett Cullen. Since the main saga ended in 2012, there haven’t been any Twilight prequels or spin-offs, though author Stephenie Meyer has written several companion novels.
At the “Meet the Cullens” panel at Fan Expo Canada, moderated by Collider‘s Maggie Lovitt, Twilight star Jackson Rathbone pushed for a prequel movie based on their character Jasper Hale, a member of the Cullen family. The actor would like to see a prequel because of the character’s dark past as a Confederate soldier-turned-vampire, which could be explored with depth and nuance.
He noted that de-aging technology could allow him to return, though he’d gladly pᴀss the torch. For him, Jasper’s arc is compelling since much remains untold on screen. Rathbone emphasized themes of redemption, forgiveness, and self-love through others’ eyes, stressing that while not every detail must be shown, Jasper’s journey toward redemption could truly resonate. I actually would really love to see Jasper’s story be told, and it would be one of those things where they have the technology, they can de-age me — it’d be sweet. But, I’m also open to pᴀssing the torch.
It’s a story, to me, about redemption. It’s a story, to me, about forgiveness. And it’s a story, to me, about learning to love yourself through the eyes of others, and it’s a beautiful experience. We don’t have to see everything on screen… I think we have to allow ourselves to have imagination, allow ourselves to see that a character can have a past that maybe we don’t know verbatim, or that there is a possibility of redemption.
What This Means For A Jasper Prequel
Rathbone expresses genuine enthusiasm for the idea of a Jasper prequel, noting that the character’s dark past as a Confederate soldier-turned-vampire offers fertile ground for a spinoff. He acknowledges the possibilities of modern de-aging technology, but also says he would happily hand the role to someone new. For Rathbone, the intrigue lies in Jasper’s unexplored history, which was only briefly touched upon in the five films.
What makes Jasper’s backstory so meaningful, according to Rathbone, is its moral undercurrent. He describes it as a tale of redemption, forgiveness, and the struggle to find self-worth through the love of others. The actor stresses that not every detail of the character’s past must be laid bare, but Jasper’s journey toward change could resonate deeply with audiences, reminding them of the transformative power of compᴀssion and second chances.
Our Take On A Jasper Prequel
Rathbone’s comments highlight the lasting fan fascination with Jasper, a character defined by both restraint and danger. In today’s era of prequels and spinoffs, a story exploring his violent past alongside his evolution into a devoted protector could feel strikingly relevant. Whether realized or not, Rathbone’s pᴀssion proves that the Twilight saga still holds an untapped depth nearly 20 years on.
