The legacy sequel to an iconic horror movie from the 1990s is now available on digital after hitting theaters earlier this summer. 2025 has undoubtedly been an incredible year for the horror genre. Films like Weapons, Together, and Final Destinations: Bloodlines have been standout horror movies.
Additionally, the smash-hit Sinners broke several records at the box office this year. 28 Years Later revived the long-ᴅᴇᴀᴅ zombie franchise and is easily one of the most unique blockbusters of the year.
These тιтles and many more prove that horror movies can still be hits with audiences and critics. This is precisely why we have seen so many horror sequels to beloved movies get released in the last few years, including to iconic slasher movies from the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s.
Popular franchises like Halloween and Scream have experienced resurgences in recent years, and the Friday the 13th franchise is kickstarting the “Jason Universe.” 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer serves as a legacy sequel to the 1997 slasher film of the same name, and you can now see it at home.
2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer Is Now Available On Digital: Why You Should Watch It
Sony revitalized the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise his year on July 18 with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., the two main stars of the original movies, returning. The newer cast members of I Know What You Did Last Summer consist of Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Jonah Hauer-King, Sarah Pidgeon, and Tyriq Withers.
This cast, especially Cline and Withers, is exceptional and ensures that the movie is an entertaining watch. Yet, it did not do huge business in theaters, currently having made $64 million at the box office. Now after just over one month in theaters, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie can now be rented or purchased on digital.
While the film includes plenty of thrills and kills, reviews for I Know What You Did Last Summer are quite disappointing, with Screen Rant’s own Mary Kᴀssel giving it a score of 4 out of 10. The legacy sequel makes some bold creative choices and includes a shocking, but divisive, twist, which helps explain the mixed reviews.
I Know What You Did Last Summer’s main twist may potentially make you upset, but the slasher film is definitely worth a watch, especially if you like the original two movies and are a fan of Hewitt and Prinze Jr.’s characters, Ray and Julie. Furthermore, even though there may be some story issues, it’s great to see the return of The Fisherman, who hunts a new group of victims.
It’s also a great showcase for the younger cast members, features some creative kill sequences, and is a fun throwback to the types of horror movies that the original 1997 movie helped define.
Overall, it’s great to return to the town of Southport and see new characters interact with the franchise’s original heroes. Thankfully, it’s easier than ever to watch I Know What You Did Last Summer, one of the year’s most entertaining horror movies, now that it’s available on digital.
