Highly-Anticipated 88% Rated Superhero Movie Is Causing Lots Of Walkouts In Early Screenings

The Toxic Avenger remake is reportedly causing a lot of walkouts in early screenings. A remake of the 1984 film of the same name, the upcoming film is written and directed by Macon Blair, following the downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze, who, following a freak accident, transforms into the тιтular mutant vigilante known as The Toxic Avenger.

Four-time Emmy winner Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) leads The Toxic Avenger reboot as the тιтular character alongside Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Emmy nominee Sarah Niles (Ted Lᴀsso), Julia Davis, Julian Kostov, David Yow, Macon Blair, Rebecca O’Mara, Jonny Coyne, and Jane Levy.

Ahead of its theatrical release on August 29, The Toxic Avenger remake is reportedly causing a lot of walkouts at early screenings. According to @Danbremner1996 on X, a screening at the Odeon Scream Unseen caused the “most walkouts” they “have ever had.” See their full post below:

According to u/PotatoPixie90210 on Reddit, who attended the same screening at the Scream Unseen, there were so many walkouts that there were too many to count, including their own party of six, who eventually walked out after about 40 minutes. See their full post below:

What This Means For The Toxic Avenger Remake

Early screenings of The Toxic Avenger remake have prompted a surprising number of walkouts, and the reasoning seems almost baked into the film’s DNA. Director Macon Blair has fully embraced the chaotic and gore-drenched absurdity of Lloyd Kaufman’s original vision, producing a film that revels in splatter gore, grotesque gags, and gleeful vulgarity.

For unprepared audiences, or those expecting a polished Marvel-like superhero movie, the unrelenting ᴀssault of blood, bile, and bad taste may be overwhelming. The film’s chaotic nature almost dares viewers to either delight in its lunacy or abandon it entirely. Yet even those primed for its outrageousness might find the remake a bit extreme.

Several Toxic Avenger reviews highlight how the remake’s repeтιтive grotesqueries can grow tired, likely contributing to the walkouts. Audiences aren’t simply leaving because the movie is bad, but because it is aggressively niche, designed for cult devotees rather than general crowds. Those who stay, however, are rewarded with exactly the kind of anarchic and sludge-soaked spectacle the тιтle promises.

Our Take On The Toxic Avenger Walkouts

The Toxic Avenger from Troma

The Toxic Avenger from Troma

I’m not surprised by the walkouts, as I had a similar experience watching the original 1984 version of The Toxic Avenger. I thought it was so silly, sleazy, and cheap that I couldn’t make it past the first 20 minutes or so. Still, The Toxic Avenger carries a warped charm for fans who revel in its unapologetic trashiness.
