It grossed only $34 million at the box office, but Julia Garner’s monster movie remake is now a hit, as it surges on streaming. It’s perhaps too early to pick the star of the summer for 2025, but Weapons stand-out Garner has to be considered among the front-runners.
It was enough of a big deal for Garner to be cast as the Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four: First Steps, the MCU debut for the most iconic of all comic book quartets, but she has now pulled off a stunning summer double-play by also starring in the smash-hit horror movie Weapons.
Garner’s 2025 summer dominance indeed extends beyond the big screen. She’s also a hit on streaming, thanks to the resurgence of her early-year monster movie remake, which was a box office disappointment.
Wolf Man Is Surging On Streaming After Making Just $34 Million In Theaters
Blumhouse’s classic monster movie remake Wolf Man, starring Garner, made just $34 million in its theatrical release, but it’s getting a second chance on streaming as it surges up the charts. Critics were underwhelmed by Leigh Whannell’s werewolf transformation movie, which sits at 48% on Rotten Tomatoes, and audiences were scarcely more enthusiastic.
Wolf Man is proving a bigger hit now that it’s on streaming, and now that there is so much buzz around Garner, as the horror remake lands at #4 on Prime Video’s top 10 chart for August 26, 2025 (via Flixpatrol).
Our Take On Wolf Man Being A Streaming Hit
Whannell’s 2020 The Invisible Man made it into theaters just before COVID shut everything down, becoming a major hit by grossing $144 million on a budget of just $7 million. That success made the director seemingly the perfect person to remake another Universal Monster classic, The Wolf Man.
Angling Invisible Man as a paranoid thriller about a woman terrorized by her ex-lover, Whannell breathed fresh life into a very familiar story. He tried a similar trick again with Wolf Man, casting Garner as a woman whose husband slowly turns into a monster.
Wolf Man’s critical and theatrical audience response would indicate that Whannell went to the relationship-trauma well one too many times. But the movie does have some positive attributes, making it a streaming hit in its initial release on Peacock, and again on Prime Video.
The presence of Weapons star Garner in the Wolf Man cast is likely one of the big forces pushing the movie back onto the streaming charts many weeks after it first became available at home. Horror fans unwilling to give the poorly-reviewed movie a sH๏τ in theaters are embracing it on streaming, giving Blumhouse’s monster movie disappointment a second life.
