After Nearly 1 Year, Divisive Romance Movie With Saltburn & Twisters Stars Is Finally Available On Netflix

One of the most intriguing and contentious romances of 2024 is finally available on Netflix, bringing together two of today’s most interesting young stars. Jacob Elordi is one of the many cast members of Euphoria who has broken through in Hollywood in a big way, and this might be his most interesting role yet.

More recently known for his unusual turn in Saltburn, Elordi remains a compelling performer with a great leading-man presence. In this new film, he is teamed up with Daisy Edgar-Jones, star of the Sally Rooney miniseries Normal People, who recently broke through on the big screen with her performances in Where the Crawdads Sing and the box office hit Twisters.

Both of these stars are clearly still on the rise, and it is exciting to see some of their more unusual projects. While Twisters performed especially well domestically, and Saltburn‘s shocking moments made it one of the most discussed films of 2023, both Elordi and Edgar-Jones have much more to share, as seen in this new, smaller movie.

On Swift Horses, a new romantic drama from Daniel Minahan, is now streaming on Netfilx. The new film is set in the 1950s and depicts the lives of Muriel Edwards Walker, played by Edgar-Jones, and Julius Walker, played by Elordi. The two become in-laws after Muriel marries Julius’ brother, Lee, played by Will Poulter.

The film received some controversy on its release. While the promotion made it look as though a romantic tension between Elordi and Edgar-Jones would be the central conflict, this was a misdirect. Instead, both Muriel and Julius explore queer relationships with entirely different characters in the film.

Films and shows with LGBTQ characters and themes have become more common, which made the promotion for On Swift Horses feel unsettling. The film depicts the difficulties in having to hide one’s idenтιтy in thoughtful ways. The promotion also choosing to hide this element felt at odds with the important themes of liberation that the film looked to explore.

The film’s reception was mixed, and it currently holds a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes. With that in mind, there has been effusive praise for the movie’s beautiful visuals and for the two main stars. Confronting the danger in being true to oneself, On Swift Horses tells an important story that is a must-watch on the streamer.

Jacob Elordi and Daisy Edgar-Jones are two of the best young stars today, and their careers are worth keeping an eye on. Seeing the two navigate cultural difficulties in On Swift Horses helps the new film feel vital, not just for its themes, but also for its excellent craftsmanship.
