Superman Holds Slim Lead Ahead Of Brad Pitt’s Highest- Grossing Movie After They Both Reach Mᴀssive Milestone

Superman continues to soar at the box office, and it has now hit a major new milestone alongside the Brad Pitt-starring F1: The Movie. Directed by James Gunn and marking the big-screen start to his new era of the DCU, Superman introduces David Corenswet as the new iteration of the iconic superhero.

The DCU movie hit theaters on July 11, only a few weeks after the release of F1: The Movie, a new sports blockbuster from director Joseph Kosinski. Pitt plays an aging racer who comes out of retirement to train an ambitious new driver, and the film has been a big success with audiences due to its thrilling race sequences.

Now well into their respective theatrical runs, Superman and F1: The Movie have both now crossed $600 million worldwide at the box office. Per Box Office Mojo, the total for Gunns’ DCU movie now sits at $604 million, comprising $346 million domestic and $257 million from overseas.

These figures put it barely ahead of F1: The Movie and its global tally of $603 million. This total comprises $185 million domestic and $417 from overseas.

What This Means For Superman & F1: The Movie

There’s a lot riding on Superman. The film marks the debut of a new iteration of what is arguably the DCU’s most important and well-known superhero. Following the positive Superman reviews, the fact that it has now crossed $600 million worldwide is a positive sign.

At $604 million, Superman is still falling short of Man of Steel‘s (2013) $670 million global haul, and it now seems unlikely to reach this figure. This is especially true considering Gunn’s film just launched on VOD. Made on an estimated budget of $225 million, Superman does seem poised to conclude its run as a success over the next few weeks.

Superman‘s success and the positive reception from audiences and critics bodes well for the future of the DCU. This includes the impending release of Supergirl and Clayface next year. Superman‘s success is also why Gunn has confirmed that he’s already working on a follow-up for Corenswet’s hero.

As for F1: The Movie, it marks a much-needed theatrical win for Apple Studios after the lackluster performance of movies like Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), Napoleon (2023), Fly Me to the Moon (2024), and the poorly reviewed Argylle (2024). Marking the highest-grossing movie of Pitt’s career, it’s possible it could now get a sequel.

Our Take On Superman & F1’s New Box Office Milestone

It’s been a rough few years at the box office for movies, with some тιтles that looked like guaranteed hits underperforming. Things are just less predictable, and China, notably, can no longer be counted on to significantly boost box office figures.

In this new box office reality, Superman and F1: The Movie crossing $600 million (with some gas still left in the tank) is worth celebrating. For the latter, in particular, as an original film, this is quite the feat.

It remains to be seen where these two тιтles will conclude their runs, but the gains will be smaller now as summer winds down and as VOD viewership takes over. Still, Superman and F1: The Movie crossing this new milestone is a promising sign.
