Fans of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, mark down October 9 in your calendars. As far as the reception of Star Wars movies goes, The Last Jedi is controversial, to say the least. Many would regard it as the lowest-ranked Star Wars movie, but there is no denying that Episode VIII has its fans.
The upcoming Star Wars movies in development may build on The Last Jedi in some ways. Be it through Rey’s New Jedi Order movie or potential sequel tie-ins in Star Wars: Starfighter, the franchise is delving back into the sequel era. Concerning a direct follow-up to Episode VIII, though, The Last Jedi fans need look no further than October 9, 2025.
Star Wars Is Finally Going To Show What Happened To Rey After The Last Jedi
In August 2025, Lucasfilm announced a new audiobook. This audiobook will be a Last Jedi tie-in, тιтled “The Jaws of Jakku.” The story is set to follow the ending of The Last Jedi, with Rey struggling to leave the trauma of her lonely childhood on Jakku in the past.
This leads her, Finn, and BB-8 back to the planet where they aid a young girl on a dangerous mission to find her family. Approximately a year takes place between the events of The Last Jedi and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, meaning the saga never revealed exactly how Rey transitioned between the former and the latter.
With this book, Star Wars will finally show what happened to Rey after the Battle of Crait. The synopsis of the book mentions Rey’s Jedi training, meaning it may show how she became as proficient as she was in The Rise of Skywalker‘s opening.
Via “The Jaws of Jakku,” Star Wars is giving The Last Jedi fans a more direct sequel, written by Star Wars publishing veteran Cavan Scott and narrated by Helen Sadler.
The Last Jedi Continues To Shape Star Wars
With this announcement, Star Wars is proving how The Last Jedi is continuing to shape the franchise, despite the division it caused. Not only is Rey’s journey after the film finally going to be explored, but the Star Wars movies in development will likely tie back to The Last Jedi in some ways.
James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi story, for instance, is expected to explore the origins of the Jedi Order. With the temple on Ahch-To being known as the first Jedi Temple, the planet that was created for The Last Jedi will surely appear again in future stories, only this time set 25000 years before.
Of course, above this, “The Jaws of Jakku” will be the biggest way in which The Last Jedi is shaping Star Wars’ future. The story will undoubtedly focus on the big reveals about Rey’s parents in that movie, specifically that they were no one special, and explore how that affected her.
The synopsis proves as much, thanks to the reference about Rey’s lonely childhood. Although this development was retconned in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, fans of Star Wars: The Last Jedi will certainly appreciate a story that delves into Rey’s character development after the film ended.
