James Gunn’s Superman Officially Becomes The First 2025 Superhero Movie To Hit Major Box Office Milestone

The box office success of Superman continues as James Gunn’s DC Universe film has crossed its latest milestone. As David Corenswet became the next Man of Steel for a new generation, DC Studios’ long-awaited reboot of the DC legend has properly kicked off the DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters.”

On August 15, Superman officially became available through digital release after only 35 days since its theatrical opening. However, it didn’t stop the movie’s run in theaters from being a success, as Gunn’s comic book installment has earned its latest victory at the worldwide box office.

Superman has officially crossed the $600 million mark at the worldwide box office, with $344.5 million coming from the domestic market while having grossed $256.4 million internationally, for a total of $600.9 million globally. The DC Studios entry remains the highest-grossing superhero movie in 2025, beating all three of Marvel Studios’ installments, from Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

The next DC Studios film release will be Supergirl, starring Milly Alcock, who had a cameo in Gunn’s DCU movie, as her project is set to open in theaters on June 26, 2026. Gunn is also in the process of writing the next installment in what is being described as the Superman Saga, with plans to get filming underway sooner rather than later.

What This Superman Box Office Update Means

With Superman’s latest box office performance, 2025 marks the first time since 2008 that DC has done better commercially against Marvel, after Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight grossed over a billion dollars worldwide. Even though The Fantastic Four: First Steps is still in theaters, the MCU entry is not expected to get to the $600 million mark at this point.

Superman is one of the all-time most popular superheroes in Hollywood, which justifies why there was more interest in his DC reboot as opposed to Marvel Studios’ 2025 releases aside from The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It also benefits DC Studios that this was also the first film that would push the DCU forward, allowing anyone to jump in from the start.

Our Take On The Superman Box Office Update

From the positive reception of Superman to the genuine excitement that there is for Gunn’s DCU franchise, it’s rewarding to see the hard work that DC Studios put into bringing Krypton’s last son back to theaters paying off. Following 2025, the success of DC’s new TV and film brand will continue, especially with all the projects that are in development.

Following the Superman post-credits scenes, Gunn will probably have more updates on his follow-up project in the coming months, as DC Studios will likely want to make sure Corenswet’s DC hero is back on the screen sooner rather than later. Hopefully, after its success in 2025, more details on the DCU future for Superman will emerge sooner rather than later.
