The Naked Gun has outgrossed a previous Liam Neeson movie that was helmed by a four-time Oscar nominee. Neeson stars in the comedy reboot as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of the wacky police lieutenant played by Leslie Nielsen in the parody series Police Squad! and the Naked Gun movie trilogy.
The Naked Gun release has not necessarily seemed auspicious. It debuted at No. 3 on the weekend of August 1 and has been steadily sinking down the domestic Top 10 since then. However, it has nevertheless had slow and steady growth, surpᴀssing the $75 million milestone worldwide and becoming the third highest-grossing live-action comedy of 2025 to date.
Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, The Naked Gun is projected to close out its fourth weekend at the domestic box office by hitting a 3-day total of $3.2 million, bringing its cumulative domestic total to $47.8 million.
In addition to pushing the movie’s domestic haul further past the level of its reported $42 million budget, this sees the movie climbing up the chart of the highest-grossing Liam Neeson movies at the domestic box office. It’s set to surpᴀss the $47.5 million gross of Ridley Scott’s 2005 epic Kingdom of Heaven, in which Neeson played Barisan of Ibelin.
In doing so, it will become the 27th highest-grossing domestic release of all time featuring Liam Neeson in any capacity (including his voice-only cameo in Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker).
What This Means For The Naked Gun
It remains to be seen how high 2025’s The Naked Gun can climb up Liam Neeson’s all-time domestic chart. In fact, there’s some doubt whether it will be able to land in the Top 25 by the end of its run. This would require it to earn an additional $12.4 million in order to outgross 2003’s Love Actually ($60.2 million).
However, if its slow and steady growth allows it to do so, it could potentially push past even more Liam Neeson movies on the chart. The next three тιтles on the chart – Unknown ($63.7 million), The Nut Job ($64.2 million), and Battleship ($65.2 million) – are bunched relatively close together, which could make them easier to pᴀss.
However, it seems entirely improbable that The Naked Gun could land any higher than No. 22, because that would mean it had outgrossed Neeson’s current 21st highest-grossing тιтle, which is the 2010 action movie The A-Team ($77.2 million).
Our Take On The Naked Gun Box Office Milestone
Regardless of The Naked Gun‘s placement on the chart, it is a breath of fresh air in Neeson’s filmography. Even though a Top 20 spot is almost certainly not in its future, it is still his highest-grossing movie of the 2020s so far, vastly outstripping his previous No. 1 тιтle, which was his 2021 thriller The Marksman ($15.6 million domestic).
