Neve Campbell “Honestly” Addresses The Scream Theory About Sidney Prescott’s Husband After Name-Drop

The fan theory behind the idenтιтy of Sidney Prescott’s husband in Scream 7 has been addressed by Neve Campbell. Sidney is the slasher franchise’s longtime final girl. She survived five of the Ghostface killer’s six big-screen rampages, Campbell having sat out 2023’s Scream VI amid a contract dispute.

During her first scene in the 2022 legacy sequel Scream, a phone conversation between Sidney and Dewey Riley (David Arquette) revealed that she was married and that her husband was named Mark. This led many fans to believe that Sidney had married Mark Kincaid (Patrick Dempsey), a police detective with whom she had romantic chemistry in 2000’s Scream 3.

However, when the cast was announced for the upcoming Scream 7, it was revealed that Sidney’s husband Mark actually has the last name Evans and will be portrayed by Community star Joel McHale.

Per Entertainment Weekly, the new Ashley Cullins book Your Favorite Scary Movie: How the Scream Films Rewrote the Rules of Horror features a new interview with Campbell where she reflects on the fan theory about Sidney’s husband. She revealed that she never considered that her character had married Mark Kincaid, saying that I thought it was just a random name.

She also revealed a bit about Sidney’s circumstances in Scream 7, saying that it would have been “challenging” for Sidney to choose to have children and that “how she chooses to parent is a big choice and perhaps different than how others might.

Read Campbell’s comment from the book below:

Honestly, I thought it was just a random name. Think about how challenging it would be to make the choice to even have a child if you were Sidney Prescott. Then, if you did have children, the stress and fear that you would live under about your history coming back to you. I don’t want to give it away, but how she chooses to parent is a big choice and perhaps different than how others might.

What This Means For Scream 7

At first, it seemed highly likely that Dempsey would reprise his role in Scream 7, as the movie is set to feature multiple returning Scream characters.

Additionally, Kincaid is still alive in the franchise’s universe. However, that would not even have been necessary for his return, as David Arquette is returning in some unknown capacity as the supposedly ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Dewey. Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who played Scream‘s Stu Macher and Scream 3‘s Roman Bridger, two supposedly ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Ghostface killers, are also returning in unspecified roles.

Other returning stars in Scream 7 include Campbell, Courteney Cox as caustic reporter Gale Weathers, and Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown as twins Chad and Mindy Meeks-Martin.

However, it makes sense why Sidney would not have brought Mark back into her life. Building a family with another Ghostface survivor may have made her feel too vulnerable, because the majority of the Ghostface killers are aware of the characters involved in the previous slayings. Additionally, his presence may have been a constant reminder of her trauma.

Our Take On Neve Campbell’s Scream Comments

One of the most intriguing elements of the newly published Campbell interview is the tease about Sidney’s mothering. It sounds like Sidney may have taught her daughter (who will be played by Isabel May) survival skills, parenting in a similar way to Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor in Terminator 2 and Jamie Lee Curtis’ Laurie Strode in 2018’s Halloween.

However, if Sidney’s choices in Scream 7 are truly “different from how others might” make them, then there may be an unexpected twist in the way that Sidney has built her family that takes things in an entirely different direction.
