Weapons Is Only The Third Horror Movie This Year To Hit This Major Box Office Milestone

Weapons has pᴀssed a huge box office milestone. The project, which stars Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, Benedict Wong, Amy Madigan, and Josh Brolin, is the new horror movie from Barbarian director Zach Cregger. It takes place in a small town that is rattled by the overnight disappearance of all but one student from a single elementary school class.

When it hit theaters on August 8, Weapons had a dazzling opening weekend that saw it taking in $70 million worldwide, outgrossing the entire $45.4 million run of Barbarian (which was a box office hit, given its slim reported budget of $4.5 million) in one fell swoop. Since then, the movie has continued to sprint up the charts.

Per Warner Bros., Weapons hit the $100 million domestic milestone during its 14th day in theaters. In addition to becoming the 13th movie of 2025 to pᴀss that milestone in North America, it is only the third horror movie to have done so, after the supernatural sequel Final Destination Bloodlines ($138.1 million domestic) and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners ($278.6 million).

It is also only the second original R-rated movie in any genre to pᴀss the $100 million milestone at the domestic box office, after Sinners.

What This Means For Weapons

2025’s Weapons has accomplished this goal by the end of its second full week in theaters, so there is plenty of runway ahead of it for it to continue growing. In fact, it is currently projected to gross roughly $13.5 million more by the end of its third weekend in domestic theaters.

However, it will most likely be unable to surpᴀss the domestic total of the runaway hit Sinners, which had already grossed a whopping $146.7 million by the end of its 14th day in theaters.

It’s roughly on the trajectory of Final Destination Bloodlines, which reached $100.9 million on its 14th day. If the new movie holds strong (and Weapons reviews, which have earned it a Certified Fresh 94% Rotten Tomatoes score, suggest that it might), it could potentially land just above that тιтle to become the second highest-grossing horror movie of 2025 to date.

If it reaches that height, Weapons‘ tenure at No. 2 may be short-lived, as the anticipated horror sequel The Conjuring: Last Rites is poised to debut in early September and may quickly surpᴀss its domestic total.

However, there are only a few more major horror movies due through the end of the year (including The Long Walk, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and The Black Phone 2), which could mean that Weapons will maintain a place among the Top 5 domestic horror movies by the end of the year.
