How To Train Your Dragon Perfectly Set Up Another OG Voice Actor’s Live-Action Sequel Return

How to Train Your Dragon‘s remake perfectly set up the return of another original voice actor for the sequel. The casting for How to Train Your Dragon‘s sequels will surely be underway soon, with the second film set for a 2027 release date. With Gerard Butler reprising his role as Stoick from the original movies, several actors could follow suit.

The ending of How to Train Your Dragon did not necessarily do a lot to outright tease a sequel, yet one is coming nonetheless. The film will be based on How to Train Your Dragon 2, and will see Hiccup entering a new leadership role among the people of Berk.

In order to make the project a highly-ranked How to Train Your Dragon movie, the casting of its major new characters will need to be pitch-perfect. What better way than to nail the casting than to repeat them from the original movie, just as the first did with Butler?

With this in mind, I believe the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon perfectly set up the return of a mᴀssive actor for the sequel.

Djimon Hounsou Should Return As Drago In How To Train Your Dragon 2

The villain of How to Train Your Dragon 2 is Drago Bludvist and was voiced in the original movie by Djimon Hounsou. Hounsou was excellent in the role thanks to his booming, deep voice. This imbued Drago with a sense of gravitas, threat, and danger that no other villain in the franchise has matched since.

Therefore, I think Djimon Hounsou needs to return as Drago in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2. Only then can the sequel nail a major component that its success hinges upon by providing a compelling, threatening villain with a domineering presence in the exact same way its animated counterpart did.

2025’s How To Train Your Dragon Perfectly Set Up Djimon Hounsou’s Return

What makes Djimon Hounsou’s potential return in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 even better is how the first movie sets it up. In the original animated movies, Drago was mentioned as a Viking who had a connection to Berk, with his base not being too far away from Stoick’s.

In the live-action How to Train Your Dragon, a new scene involved Stoick mentioning how several Viking clans of Berk came from across the globe. For one Viking, Stoick points out that his clan came from Blåland, the term that Vikings used to refer to Africa. This sets up Hounsou’s casting as Drago.

Djimon Hounsou was born in Benin, Africa. With this added bit of lore in the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon, it would make perfect sense for the Vikings who traveled from Africa to settle near Berk to have ventured beyond the small island.

Thanks to this added piece of information, How to Train Your Dragon has the perfect in-universe explanation for Djimon Hounsou’s return as a fantastic villain in the live-action sequel.
