Disney’s $1 Billion Hit Will Fall Just Shy Of A Final Box Office Record

Disney’s recent Lilo & Sтιтch remake is a huge hit for the studio, but it is now clear that the film will fail to set one surprising 2025 box office record by the end of its run. Earning more than $1 billion and solidifying Disney’s remake future, the movie has already become the biggest Hollywood hit of 2025 globally.

2025 has been an interesting year at the box office. While films like F1: The Movie have found surprising success, some of what seemed to be guaranteed hits, like the Marvel projects The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Thunderbolts*, have underperformed. Snow White was a disaster for Disney, yet Lilo & Sтιтch was able to break through tremendously.

The state of the box office is changing, and nothing attests to this further than the highest-grossing movie of 2025, the Chinese smash hit Ne Zha II. Considering this, however, what is most surprising is the performance of Lilo & Sтιтch domestically, culminating in this surprising statistic.

Lilo & Sтιтch Won’t Beat Minecraft To Be 2025’s Highest Grosser Domestically (So Far)

Lilo & Sтιтch might be the biggest Hollywood hit globally, but it will not be able to overtake the biggest domestic hit, A Minecraft Movie, by the end of its run. Minecraft is now one of Warner Bros. biggest movies of all time, earning $423 million domestically, with a worldwide total of more than $953 million.

This has been a huge year for Warner Bros., who currently have three of the five highest domestic grosses of 2025. A Minecraft Movie‘s enormous success was shocking, but the incredible performance of Sinners, an original film by Ryan Coogler, is equally surprising. Rounded out by Superman‘s excellent domestic run, this is a big year for the studio at home.

Lilo & Sтιтch is just about to move to streaming on Disney+ on September 3rd, and is already available for purchase digitally. While the film’s legs have been excellent, it is currently making less than $250,000 a week and dropping quickly. The movie is currently in only 65 theaters, and sits at $421,743,355 domestically per Box Office Mojo.

While the film is just over $2 million away from overtaking Minecraft domestically, it does not appear that this will happen during this initial release. Still, the box office for Lilo & Sтιтch is a truly impressive feat for the dominant studio, especially in the wake of several of their other films underperforming this year.

Disney could still take the overall top domestic spot later this year. They have Zootopia 2, Tron: Ares, and more, including subsidiary 20th Century Studios’ Avatar: Fire and Ash still to come. As it stands, however, Lilo & Sтιтch will have to settle for being the biggest Hollywood hit of 2025 overall, just not at home.
