While there are plenty of romantic comedies that get released each year, Amazon Prime Video is home to some of the very best modern ones, especially a hidden gem from 2022. So many quality rom-coms can be found on the streaming service and far too many of them fly under the radar.
Some are big hits like the Oscar-nominated The Big Sick or the LGBTQ+ book adaptation Red, White, & Royal Blue, while others like Upgraded and Somebody I Used to Know deserved more appreciation. That said, one release from 2022 might be the best romantic comedy movie available on Prime Video.
I Want You Back Is A Great Romantic Comedy
Though it wasn’t one of the most talked-about movies of the 2020s, I Want You Back is one of the best rom-coms of the era. The film focuses on two people who find each other after recently getting dumped and partner up to sabotage their exes’ new relationships.
Of course, the two ultimately fall for each other along the way. Like all the best romantic comedies, the chemistry between the leads is what makes it so great, while there are plenty of fun antics and shenanigans along the way.
There are wacky scenes at a school production of Little Shop of Horrors and there’s an absurd sequence where characters take drugs at a nightclub and dive off a roof into a H๏τ tub, among others. Outside of those wild moments, there’s a lot of tenderness between the main characters that makes it sweet.
In the end, I Want You Back was heavily praised by critics. It currently holds an 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was praised for how it manages to perfectly balance the romance with the comedy.
I Want You Back Has A Phenomenal Cast
The leads of I Want You Back are great enough to carry a rom-com on their own. Peter and Emma are played by Charlie Day and Jenny Slate, who both have major comedic chops as evidenced by It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Parks and Recreation. Their chemistry is electric in every scene of the film.
The supporting cast is where this gets taken to the next level. Peter’s ex, Anne, is portrayed by Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez, while Emma’s ex, Noah, is played by Scott Eastwood. Then there’s their new romantic partners, played by Clark Backo and rising star Manny Jacinto.
To further add to things, Scream star Mason Gooding and the talented Dylan Gelula are Emma’s roommates, who are a couple that’s overly affectionate on an awkward level. Pete Davidson even pops up in one of the film’s funniest scenes. The cast, writing, and chemistry all make I Want You Back a modern rom-com classic.
