Director Of $150M Horror Hit Didn’t Mess With Psychic Advice After Declining Streaming Deal

The director of Weapons, Zach Cregger, has revealed he didn’t mess with psychic advice after declining a streaming deal. Weapons follows a mysterious case in which a group of children all run away from home on the same night. The 2025 horror opened to an impressive $44 million, and Weapons has since surpᴀssed $150 million worldwide.

With Weapons dominating the box office and closing in on blockbuster status, Cregger has officially established himself as a force to be reckoned with and one of the few original horror storytellers capable of drawing major crowds. However, according to Cregger, the success of 2025’s horror film was all due to some advice from a psychic.

In an interview with Puck, the director revealed he turned down a streaming deal for Weapons. According to Cregger, “before [he] even sent the script out,” one streamer made a $5 million preemptive offer based solely on Weapons’ concept, but he declined. Instead, he auctioned the script, setting a very specific debut date: 8 a.m. on Jan. 23, 2023.

Detailing his reasons why, Cregger states a psychic he met on New Year’s Eve told him: “Don’t do any business anything until after January 17th or 16th.” While skeptical of the psychic’s claims, Cregger thought, “You know what? I’m not messing around with this!” As a result, the advice led to his deal with Warner Bros. Check out Cregger’s story below:

Oh my God, this is crazy. I went to Sedona, Arizona, that New Year’s with some friends and stayed at this really hippy-dippy wellness retreat. We got comped to stay there, and there was a psychic who, on New Year’s Eve, was giving her prognostications for the coming year. And she was just so full of s–t. She said that Vladimir Putin will be ᴀssᴀssinated, and Donald Trump will be in prison. And she made all of these completely outlandish predictions. But she looked at me and said, “Don’t do any business anything until after January 17th or 16th.” And I was like, “You know what? I’m not messing around with this!”

What This Means For Weapons

News about apparent studio demand for Cregger’s horror is nothing new, considering it was previously reported that Jordan Peele lost the bidding war for Weapons. However, this anecdote from Cregger showcases just how enticing Weapons’ concept was to buyers, especially considering the unnamed streaming studio’s “aggressive” offer based solely on the concept, before the script was released.

Studios knew Weapons was going to be a hit, especially after Cregger’s debut, Barbarian, a micro-budget, word-of-mouth hit, brought in a $45 million global haul. Consequently, Warner Bros. had confidence in Cregger — fast-tracking his script and giving him creative freedom — and Weapons became a critical success. Apparently, it seems Cregger was right not to disregard the psychic’s advice.

Whether you believe in psychics or not, for Cregger, the warning was very real. While he may have started his career making people laugh, the director has clearly found his niche. Weapons not only solidifies Cregger’s status as a new master of horror but also shows how much power a filmmaker can have when they bet on themselves.

Cregger’s story seems almost too fantastical to be true. However, with Weapons shattering box office expectations, and Cregger’s upcoming Resident Evil reboot, it’s clear that his instincts (and possibly that Sedona psychic) were right all along. If studios are smart, they’ll give the director more leeway in future projects, as it’s clear Cregger knows how to make a hit.
