Aquaman and Chief of War star Jason Momoa is working on a new project with Bullet Train director and John Wick co-director David Leitch: screenwriter Will Dunn’s The Pirate. The movie’s script was recently acquired by Amazon MGM studios; Leitch is looking to direct, while Momoa would potentially star, as well as produce.
In addition to the DCEU and his brand new historical TV show, Momoa is known for projects including Game of Thrones, Fast X, and Dune. He will be reprising two of these roles in the upcoming movies Fast 11 and Dune: Part Three. Dunn is a relatively new writer, but recently saw success with Ms. Marvel, and is credited as the story editor for all six episodes of the miniseries.
Though Chad Stahelski was solely credited, he and Leitch co-directed John Wick, coming from the same background as stunt coordinators. Leitch then brought his stunt work experience to the action projects of Bullet Train, Atomic Blonde, and Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and now will do the same with a high-seas setting.
Momoa is in negotiations to produce The Pirate under his production company On the Roam, while Leitch and Kelly McCormick are negotiating the same, but under the 87North banner. Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, the premise of The Pirate is “being described as The Raid set on a pirate ship.“
What This Means For The Pirate & Jason Momoa
Momoa has swiftly risen to be one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars, and projects like Chief of War have seen him go beyond pure, entertaining action and comedy, moving into the more serious space of historical dramas. Hopefully, The Pirate will be another fresh project that will help prove Momoa’s versatility and challenge him as a star, establishing his longevity in Hollywood.
Meanwhile, Dunn is also the writer of The Peasant, an upcoming medieval thriller starring and directed by Dev Patel. While the screenwriter has valuable experience in the industry, it seems as though we have yet to see what could be his defining works, and Momoa’s involvement will certainly draw attention to this new project.
Our Take On Jason Momoa’s The Pirate
The scant plot details don’t necessarily confirm that The Pirate takes place during the Golden Age of Piracy: the time of the popular image of pirates adapted into more family-friendly versions like Pirates of the Caribbean. Still, Hollywood could do with some more good pirate movies, a historically underwhelming sub-genre (though it has seen some better results in modern television).
Jason Momoa is the perfect actor to star in a high-seas adventure, while it would be interesting to see Leitch bring the stylish action that characterizes his movies to a period piece. Projects currently in development suggest that Dunn has a lot of potential as a writer, and hopefully, all these elements will come together to create something special with The Pirate.
