A Jason Statham action movie has been a major streaming success, but there is no word yet on whether it will get a sequel. Statham has become one of the most bankable action stars in the world, but he has only had two successful franchises on his own. However, his biggest hit movie hasn’t received a sequel.
As an action star on his own, Jason Statham’s biggest hit is The Meg, which made $529 million worldwide, with its sequel making $398 million. However, he has three movies that made more money, all in the Fast & Furious franchise. One of those movies, which made $760.7 million, focused on two actors: Statham and Dwayne Johnson.
Hobbs & Shaw 2 Must Happen – The First Film’s Streaming Success Proves It
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw hit theaters in 2019, a spin-off from the Fast & Furious franchise. Dwayne Johnson reprised his role as former DSS agent Luke Hobbs, while Jason Statham returned as former MI6 mercenary Deckard Shaw. The two men hated each other, but were forced to work together to stop terrorists.
Hobbs & Shaw has returned to Netflix and jumped near the top of the ratings, alongside movies like the international sensation KPop: Demon Hunters and the Vanessa Kirby (Fantastic Four) Netflix original movie Night Always Comes. This is also not the first time this has happened, showing the movie’s lasting success.
During its theatrical run, Hobbs & Shaw made $173.9 million in the United States and $760.7 million worldwide, making a sequel seem like an easy decision. However, it has not happened yet. With it consistently reaching the top of the streaming charts whenever it switches services, there is money to be made with more of these movies.
Hobbs & Shaw Should Be The Future Of The Fast & Furious Franchise
From the way it looks, the next Fast & Furious movie will mark the end of the road for Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) and his extended family. This last film is set to hit theaters in 2027, but given the franchise’s financial success, the studio may consider continuing the series in some form.
There have been rumors since 2015 about a female-led Fast & Furious spinoff, and it even had Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Anderson Beer, and Geneva Robertson-Dworet as screenwriters. It never happened. In 2024, Zach Dean (Fast X) was hired to write a standalone film, but there has been no word on its progress.
However, one thing that’s a guaranteed winner is another Hobbs and Shaw film. That is because Jason Statham and Dwayne Johnson are still major stars, and fans still pay money to see them. Johnson has slipped in popularity in the last few years, but is still an A-list star, and Statham has a built-in audience that loves what he does.
Once Dom’s story is done, the best thing the franchise can do is keep Hobbs and Shaw together, whether they like it or not, and continue the adventures of these two antiheroes. It would change the franchise from the ensemble format into a buddy-cop-styled film series, but as the streaming numbers show, this is what fans want.
What We Know About Hobbs & Shaw 2 & Why It Might Not Happen
In 2019, producers claimed they had plans for a Hobbs and Shaw spin-off, but it seems this spin-off was postponed, which is disappointing. The Fast & Furious spin-off was instead changed in 2023 to Hobbs & Reyes, which featured Dwayne Johnson and Jason Momoa, the villain from Fast X who set out to kill Dom and his team.
Fast X ended with a scene where Reyes was targeting Hobbs after finishing with Dom and his crew. The idea was that these two men would face off before the final Fast and the Furious movie returned with Dom getting revenge on Reyes. However, even that movie seems to no longer be happening.
It is a complete mystery concerning what is going on with the entire Fast & Furious franchise, and it seems only Vin Diesel has anything going on when it comes to the future. It looks like everything with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham might be postponed to finish Dom’s story.
With time running out, if there is another Hobbs movie, it might have to arrive after the Fast and Furious franchise ends, and in that case, bringing back Statham and Johnson for the Hobbs and Shaw sequel, while starting a new era, is the best bet.
