Darth Revan is one of the most legendary Sith Lords in the Star Wars galaxy. An iconic warrior hailing from some of the best Star Wars video games of all time, very few characters in the galaxy far, far away look cooler than Revan. As such, Darth Revan’s connections to Mandalorian history are a key reason why.
Darth Revan debuted in Legends’ Knights of the Old Republic games, a Jedi corrupted to the dark side as a Sith Lord who was ultimately redeemed. In the current Disney canon, Revan’s name has been referenced a few times. However, some fans may not be aware of Darth Revan’s full history, particularly the origin of his iconic mask.
Darth Revan May Be A Sith Lord, But His Mask Is Mandalorian
When Darth Revan was still a Jedi Knight, he defied the Jedi Council, amᴀssing a force to fight the Mandalorian Neo-Crusaders on behalf of the Republic. During the conflict, Revan picked up a mask near a mᴀss-grave that had belonged to a Mandalorian female, located on a world the Neo-Crusaders had ravaged in their attacks.
Choosing to don the mask in remembrance of the Mandalorian who tried to prevent her people’s brutality on the planet Cathar, Revan swore never to take off the mask until the Neo-Crusaders were defeated once and for all.
Incorporating it into his armor, this red and grey mask turned Revan into a symbol, one he didn’t remove even after he and his apprentice, Darth Malak, were corrupted to the dark side and became Sith Lords, declaring war on the Republic to forge a new Sith Empire.
While the mask was removed following his capture by the Jedi who had his memory wiped, Revan donned the mask once more to face the Sith Emperor Vitiate. Rather than being Sith in origin like one might ᴀssume, the Mandalorian origins behind the mask are far more unique, a symbol representing Revan’s fierce determination (regardless of his current Force alignment).
Will Future Star Wars Movies Explore Darth Revan’s Full History?
Presently, it’s unclear if we’ll ever get more than a few name-drops and Easter eggs pointing to Darth Revan and his dynamic history in the current Star Wars canon.
That said, I do have this small hope that more of Revan’s story could be revealed through flashbacks and/or further explorations into Mandalorian history and culture in something like next year’s Mandalorian & Grogu movie.
Regardless, the Mandalorian origin of Darth Revan’s mask is just one of many fascinating elements of his character, highlighting just how incredible he could be as a central figure in future Star Wars movies or shows.
