Only One Marvel Team Could’ve Beaten Thanos In Infinity War, & We’ll Never See Them Again

Thanos came out as the ultimate victor in Avengers: Infinity War, but one superhero team who is unlikely to return actually could have stopped him from winning in the first place. Thanos, also known as The Mad тιтan, is a terrifying tyrannical alien who spent his life conquering planets and wiping out half of the population wherever he went.

All of this was in order to bring ‘balance’ to the galaxy, and avoid resources being stretched too thin. However, when Thanos finally got his hands on the Infinity Stones, he was able to achieve his goal across the galaxy with the literal snap of his fingers, rather than tracking down planets one by one to bring about his mission.

The Avengers and the rest of the heroes from across the MCU gathered together to try and put a stop to his nefarious plans, but unfortunately, Thanos proved much too powerful, and despite most superhero movies having a hopeful ending, Thanos came out on top in Avengers: Infinity War. But it didn’t have to be that way.

Marvel’s Eternals Appear To Be The Only Existing MCU Team That Could’ve Beaten Thanos In Avengers: Infinity War

Thanos was able to kill Loki, an Asgardian God, and defeat and humiliate Hulk in the first few minutes of Avengers: Infinity War. Evidently, he was no ordinary villain, and his strength far exceeded the typical threat that the Avengers had faced previously. In addition, he has a small but dedicated group of guards with extraordinary powers.

As much as the heroes of Earth fought back, there was no hope of taking down Thanos. Even with teams spread out across the universe trying to ensure Thanos couldn’t get his hands on all the Infinity Stones, their individual missions all ultimately fell apart, and heroes like Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff proved too weak to hold Thanos back.

But, the Eternals, who were quietly living out their lives on Earth at the time of the attack, could have stood up against The Mad тιтan. As beings blessed with powers from the Celestials themselves, they had the power to fight Thanos off. And more than that, they had literally millennia of experience fighting together.

However, the Eternals were not present in the fight against Thanos, and their various powers went unexplored until years later, after the snap was already reversed. But their strength alone could have been the key to turning the tide of the battle against Thanos.

Why The Eternals Didn’t Fight Thanos In Avengers: Infinity War

As much as the Eternals had the power at their disposal to hold back Thanos in the MCU, they were strictly forbidden from interfering in the affairs of humankind unless Deviants, the monsters that they were ᴀssigned to fight, were involved. However, in the comics, Thanos is in fact an Eternal with a Deviant gene.

Despite this, the movie suggests that the Eternals were forbidden from getting involved in the conflict with Thanos. On top of that, the Eternals had already been split up for many years, with each going on their own journey to far corners of the Earth.

As such, reuniting would have taken time, because none of the Eternals have the power to teleport. Yes, Sprite has super speed, and Ikaris can fly, but it would still take some time to ᴀssemble, and Thanos’ attack on Earth was sudden and spread out.

With all of that in mind, it seems like the Eternals may have been reprimanded for revealing themselves to the residents of Earth, and the heroes. Instead, they were better off retreating from the conflict, and waiting for further instructions. After all, they’d lived through many other global conflicts and attacks before.

Why It Doesn’t Look Like The Eternals Will Return In The MCU

As much as the Eternals could have been helpful in the fight against Thanos, their entire existence was revealed to be a lie in Eternals. While they believed they were ᴀssigned to eradicate Deviants from the face of the Earth to allow the species to flourish and grow, they were actually a part of the plan to destroy the planet.

While some of the Eternals accepted and embraced this new directive, the majority were appalled to learn that they were being used in this way. They were stunned to learn that the Earth was essentially an incubator for a new Celestial, and they required a certain number of humans to be alive in order to hatch.

After confronting their true idenтιтy, the team was split apart. With Sersi being taken by Arishem, and some of her siblings following her into the depths of space in hopes of finding her and bringing her home. With some Eternals roaming in the depths of space, and others essentially retired, it’s unlikely that their stories will intersect with Earth again.

However, the most important reason why these characters are unlikely to be brought back is due to the film’s poor reception, both critically and financially. Eternals drastically underperformed, and the fanbase failed to connect with these characters. With that in mind, it seems unlikely that Marvel Studios is in any rush to take their story forward beyond Eternals.
