Sydney Sweeney’s New Western Movie With Quentin Tarantino Vibes Breaks A Key Rotten Tomatoes Streak

Sydney Sweeney‘s breakthrough began in 2018, when she drew notice in the nostalgic teen dramedy Everything Sucks!, delivered a chilling performance in Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, and played a troubled young woman in HBO’s Sharp Objects. Not long after, she made her big-screen debut in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, playing a member of the infamous Manson family.

Her career quickly gained momentum with two standout HBO series – the raw, emotionally charged Euphoria and the sharp social satire of The White Lotus season 1 – earning Emmy nominations for both. In 2023, she displayed impressive range, taking on the role of a whistleblower in the tense HBO drama Reality while also showcasing her comedic side in the hit rom-com Anyone But You.

By 2024, Sweeney pushed her versatility even further, entering the superhero realm with Madame Web and headlining the psychological horror film Immaculate. In 2025, Sweeney’s slate remains busy, with starring roles in Americana, Ron Howard’s survival thriller Eden, and The Housemaid.

Americana Breaks A Key Rotten Tomatoes Streak For Sydney Sweeney

Americana has broken a key Rotten Tomatoes streak for Sydney Sweeney. Written and directed by Tony Tost, the creator of Damnation and showrunner for Poker Face season 2, the new crime thriller follows several misfits in a small South Dakota town whose lives intersect in violent ways when a rare Lakota Ghost shirt falls onto the black market.

The movie stars Sydney Sweeney alongside Emmy winner Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird), Halsey, Eric Dane (Euphoria), Zahn McClarnon (Dark Winds), Gavin Maddox Bergman, Derek Hinkey, Simon Rex (Red Rocket), Toby Huss, Emmy nominee Harriet Sansom Harris (Hacks), and Donald Cerrone.

With the movie playing in theaters since August 15, Americana currently has a 76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with 50+ verified ratings at the time of writing. This breaks a streak for Sydney Sweeney, since her last few films haven’t exactly done well with audiences.

Americana has a 67% score from critics.

This includes Echo Valley (51%), Immaculate (58%), and Madame Web (53%). While Anyone But You (87%) and Reality (67%) did well with audiences, the streak extends back further to Night Teeth (49%), The Voyeurs (46%), Nocturne (40%), and Clementine (50%).

Though audiences haven’t been flocking to theaters to see Americana, considering it’s made less than $500,000 to date, the few who have seen it seem to be enjoying it. Audience reviews praise the film for its originality, quirky characters, and standout performance from Sweeney, often comparing it to Tarantino or the Coen brothers. Americana proves that Sweeney’s risks are finally paying off.
