A24’s Fantasy Movie With 76% RT Score Becomes Instant Streaming Hit

A new A24 fantasy movie has become an instant streaming hit. The company behind Ex Machina and Hereditary has been well-regarded among audiences and usually produces acclaimed content. Known for independent films, A24 has become more mainstream and backed several Oscar winners, including Moonlight and Everything Everywhere All at Once.

While a handful of recent releases have divided moviegoers, the company continues to produce a variety of films each year. Among some popular A24 movies are Lady Bird and Uncut Gems, and the studio has also been known for horror projects, including Talk to Me and the X trilogy.

When it comes to fantasy, A24 has been behind The Green Knight and Dream Scenario, which garnered impressive Tomatometer scores of 89% and 91%, respectively. The latest genre hybrid is Death of a Unicorn, which underwhelmed commercially and only scored 53% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Legend Of Ochi Is A Streaming Hit

The Legend of Ochi stars Helena Zengel, Emily Watson, Finn Wolfhard, and Willem Dafoe. Since releasing, the movie has earned critical praise and presently holds a score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The audience-based Popcornmeter for The Legend of Ochi is at 62%.

Now, The Legend of Ochi has instantly become a streaming hit by climbing the HBO Max charts. The A24 film is currently ranked second on the platform’s list of Top 10 movies today, behind only Final Destination: Bloodlines. That also puts it ahead of Death of a Unicorn, which sits in third.

Other movies on the chart include Freaky Tales, Alien: Covenant, Sinners, The Woman King, Get a Job, Kung Fu Panda 2, and the stand-up comedy special, Marc Maron: Panicked.

What This Means For The Legend Of Ochi

A24, having amᴀssed a loyal fandom, could factor into The Legend of Ochi suddenly performing well on HBO Max. The critical reception and cast, highlighted by Dafoe as Maxim, might be other notable draws, and looking ahead, it will be interesting to see what kind of hold it maintains on the streaming chart.

The success on HBO Max is significant for The Legend of Ochi because the fantasy movie did not make a big splash commercially. Despite a strong Tomatometer score and the general positive reputation of A24, The Legend of Ochi earned under $5 million globally. Instantly surging to second place upon release suggests that it can pull more audiences on streaming.
