One MCU Star Doesn’t Rate Fantastic Four: First Steps A 5/5 Due To One Major Reason

An actor from The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ cast shares his thoughts on the Phase 6 MCU movie, and he has some complaints to voice. With a 86% Tomatometer and a 91% Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is officially one of the best-received entries in the Multiverse Saga. However, some details are rather contentious.

On Letterboxd, Mole Man actor Paul Walter Hauser gives The Fantastic Four: First Steps a 3.5 out of 5 rating. Hauser praises the movie’s “score, the production design, the performances,” but jokingly complains that his scene with Vanessa Kirby’s Sue Storm was removed from the final cut. Hauser also teases Franklin Richards’ return in Avengers: Doomsday, adding the hashtag “#FantasticFive”:

“I love the score, the production design, the performances. I wish they hadn’t cut my scene with Vanessa Kirby, but I’m stoked that I got to be in a Marvel movie (first world problem sнιт; I’m spoiled rotten to get to act).

Excited to follow the Franklin story!!! #FantasticFive”

The scene Paul Walter Hauser refers to in his review has also been addressed by Vanessa Kirby. Speaking to Variety, Vanessa Kirby revealed Sue Storm’s mention of her most powerful power was cut. According to Kirby, Sue threatened Hauser’s Mole Man, saying, “I could give you an aneurysm if I wanted to in two seconds.” However, this scene was ultimately removed.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps glosses over Harvey Elder’s feud with the Fantastic Four. By the time Galactus arrives, Mole Man has already smoothed out his differences with the team. The only explicit reference to their conflict happens when Reed Richards and Harvey Elder almost come to blows at the Baxter Building.

Against what many fan theories posed, The Fantastic Four: First Steps doesn’t destroy Earth-828. Following Galactus’ defeat, Mole Man might become a recurring ally to the Fantastic Four. Hence, Mole Man and the Invisible Woman’s deleted scene could be included to Avengers: Secret Wars or The Fantastic Four: First Steps‘ eventual sequel.

Our Take On Paul Walter Hauser’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps Review

The Fantastic Four: First Steps had many characters and ideas to juggle. Its addition of multiple classic villains in montage sequences and Mole Man’s supporting role is an inspired way to honor the team’s legacy. However, the Fantastic Four’s enemies had very little time to make a memorable impression. For example, John Malkovich’s White Ghost was cut entirely before the movie hit theaters.

Mole Man’s heroic turn in The Fantastic Four: First Steps probably would have had a bigger impact on the plot with a little more explicit backstory. Harvey Elder is one of the most iconic enemies in Fantastic Four lore, and Paul Walter Hauser’s version seems to have a long history with the MCU team. Perhaps future appearances could develop the villain a little more.
