Keke Palmer’s recent role in The Pickup may not have been the most effective career choice, but the actor has some exciting upcoming projects that could hopefully get her back on track. Prime Video’s The Pickup received negative reviews for its derivative story and messy character work, though Palmer was admittedly the best part of the cast.
The underwhelming performance of The Pickup was somewhat of an outlier for Palmer, who has a great track record when it comes to choosing fun, original movies. Whether that’s her most recent outing, One of Them Days, or more mainstream blockbusters like Jordan Peele’s Nope, the actor has a strong filmography up to this point. The Pickup is a subpar heist movie, but Palmer’s luck hasn’t run out.
Good Fortune Looks Like A Much Better Movie For Keke Palmer Than The Pickup
The cast of Good Fortune also includes Seth Rogen, Sandra Oh, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. These comedic talents bring a huge amount of credibility to the film; Ansari and Rogen have been friends for many years, and the former’s previous work on Parks & Rec makes him a natural fit for this goofy, comedy-forward story.
It’s been a long time since Reeves has led an original movie, and it’s easy to forget just how reliable of a comedy actor he can be when he’s not fighting ᴀssᴀssins as John Wick or Neo from The Matrix. Whether it’s the Bill & Ted franchise or his early comedies like I Love You to Death, Reeves is a great choice for this character.
While there’s always a chance that Palmer will end up being underutilized in Good Fortune just like she was in The Pickup, this doesn’t seem likely. She’s listed as one of the film’s top-billed cast members, and it seems like a very character-driven story that will make the most of everybody involved.
