James Gunn’s Superman Box Office Overtakes Steven Spielberg’s Sci-Fi Hit On Studio’s Highest-Grossing Chart

Superman is continuing to climb a major box office chart. The superhero movie, which was written and directed by James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker), is the first installment in the newly rebranded DC Universe. 2025’s Superman stars David Corenswet as Superman opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Warner Bros. now reports that Superman has taken in an additional $866,000 from 78 international markets on Wednesday. This gross has pushed the movie’s cumulative international total to $250.3 million. Overall, its cumulative global total is now $585.1 million.

Although its progress is slowing as it approaches its sixth weekend in theaters, Superman is still continuing to hit huge benchmarks, and it has now become only the seventh movie to pᴀss the $585 million global milestone in 2025 so far.

This total has also helped it climb to No. 34 on the all-time chart of the highest-grossing Warner Bros. movies worldwide. It has now surpᴀssed the $583.5 million gross earned by Steven Spielberg’s 2018 hit Ready Player One.

What This Means For Superman

Even as it nears the end of its run, Superman is still proving its ability to soar up the charts. In fact, the James Gunn superhero movie should be able to continue climbing the all-time Warner Bros. chart. The next-highest-grossing movie is 2007’s I Am Legend, which earned $585.5 million worldwide, meaning Superman only needs $0.4 million to close the gap.

The latest projections from Box Office Theory show that Superman is expected to take in roughly $5 million more by the end of its sixth weekend at the domestic box office alone. This should allow the movie to surpᴀss not only I Am Legend, but The Hangover Part II ($586.8 million), climbing to No. 32.

However, it remains to be seen if it can break into the company’s all-time Top 30. In order to do so, it will need to outgross the $655.7 million earned by 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. This would require it to earn more than $70 million, which seems somewhat outside the realm of possibility given its current trajectory.

Our Take On The Superman Box Office Milestone

Regardless of its chart standing, the movie can be considered a success. The reported $225 million budget of Superman likely places its estimated break-even point somewhere around $562.5 million or lower, so it is probably already in the black. $400 million also tends to be the threshold for blockbusters to get sequels, and it has long since hit that mark.
