James Gunn Addresses The Status Of Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn & Idris Elba’s Bloodsport In The DC Universe

More cast members from the DCEU franchise may be joining the DC Universe as James Gunn shares a new update. The DCU’s Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters” is, for the most part, serving as a reboot from DC Studios, but a number of familiar faces are remaining with the new universe.

In the case of Peacemaker season 2, several cast members are coming back to reprise their roles from the DCEU. However, it appears that a few other DCEU actors and their characters could soon become canon to the larger DCU, thanks to a new update from Gunn.

During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the character of Harley Quinn was brought up, as the outlet asked Gunn what the future for the DC character is and whether Margot Robbie will continue to play her. Keeping it very cryptic, Gunn shared the following response:

That will be revealed down the line [When asked if there is going to be a new Harley Quinn or if Margot Robbie will reprise the role in the future of the DCU].

However, EW also got Gunn to discuss a different DCEU character who may be coming into the DCU, and played by the same actor. The DC Studios CEO shared that they are looking for a way to integrate Idris Elba’s Bloodsport, following his debut in 2021’s The Suicide Squad:

I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out. So we’ll see what happens.

What James Gunn’s Harley Quinn & Bloodsport Update Means

At the time of writing, the only known DCU project that may involve Harley Quinn is Henchmen, a Batman spinoff from Zach Cregger. However, that project hasn’t even been pitched yet to DC Studios, meaning it’s too early to tell if Robbie will be the one to play Harley Quinn again, or if they will cast a new actor altogether.

Regarding this, it is unknown if the actress is still interested in playing the classic supervillain, as she hasn’t spoken much about the possibility of being part of Gunn’s franchise. Given how short Elba’s time as Bloodsport was, it’s not surprising that they may be focusing more on bringing him into the DCU so they can utilize him further.

Our Take On James Gunn’s Harley Quinn & Bloodsport Update

Idris Elba as Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad

Following Gunn’s comments, it seems likely that Robbie’s fate as Harley Quinn has been determined, but the studio simply does not want to reveal that yet. That is why it wouldn’t be shocking if the DCU sees Harley Quinn sooner rather than later.

With Elba’s Bloodsport, there is still so much they can do with him in the DCU. Given how talented the actor is, it would be phenomenal to see him get to continue playing Robert DuBois or even a new character altogether after his short time in the DCEU movie timeline. Hopefully, more details on Harley Quinn and Bloodsport’s future with the DC Universe will emerge sooner rather than later.
