It’s the perfect time to check out Mark Wahlberg in one of his most unique roles now that it is finally streaming. Since emerging on the scene in the ’90s, he has been one of the most popular actors in the world. Mark Wahlberg’s best movies include Boogie Nights, The Departed, and The Fighter.
In addition to these critically acclaimed films, Wahlberg has also appeared as an action hero and a likable leading man in comedies. However, he has very rarely played villains in his career. In fact, the 1996 movie Fear marked the only time Wahlberg played a villain… until this year.
Fear could be considered an underrated Wahlberg movie solely because it shows audiences a new side of him. In the film, Wahlberg plays a violent character who terrorizes his girlfriend and her family. Now, 29 years after the release of Fear, Wahlberg plays another villain in Flight Risk, which is finally streaming on Prime Video.
Mark Wahlberg’s Flight Risk Is Now Streaming, & He’s The Best Part
Flight Risk is directed by Mel Gibson, who has helmed several acclaimed movies throughout his career. Alongside Wahlberg, the cast includes Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace. The film follows U.S. Marshal Madolyn Harris, who is trying to transfer a government witness, Winston, from Alaska to New York so he can testify against the Moretti crime family.
Upon boarding the plane, they meet their pilot, who is going by the name Daryl Booth (played by Wahlberg). While everything seems to be going smoothly at first, it is eventually revealed that Wahlberg’s character was hired by the Moretti family to ensure that Winston never makes it to New York. Madolyn is forced to fight against Daryl as he tries to sabotage their flight.
Unfortunately, reviews for Flight Risk were very negative upon its release, with Screen Rant‘s own Mary Kᴀssel giving it an abysmal score of 2 out of 10 stars. Additionally, the movie has an incredibly negative critic score of 29% on Rotten Tomatoes. The critical consensus is that the story is underwhelming, and a lot of the dialogue is laughably bad.
However, Wahlberg’s performance is easily the best part of the movie. Admittedly, his over-the-top portrayal of the evil pilot may not work for some viewers, but it is hard to deny that watching Wahlberg in Flight Risk is so much fun. After playing so many heroic characters over the years, it’s refreshing to see the actor play such a vile person.
Because of that, don’t let Flight Risk‘s negative reviews keep you away from the film. Sure, the story can be cheesy at times, but it’s clear Wahlberg is having a blast in the film. It might not be a great movie, but Wahlberg’s villainous performance is reason enough to give Flight Risk a watch, especially since it’s now streaming on Prime Video.
