A fantasy flop starring Gerard Butler has found new life on streaming. Butler is a Scottish actor who had his breakout role in 2007’s 300, in which he played King Leonidas. Since then, he has appeared in a number of notable movies, including the animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy and the rom-coms P.S. I Love You and The Ugly Truth.
However, Gerard Butler action movies make up the biggest part of his filmography. These include major hits such as the Olympus Has Fallen movies, in which he plays intrepid Secret Service agent Mike Banning, the disaster movie Geostorm, and more recent outings such as Plane, Greenland, and Den of Thieves: Pantera.
Gods Of Egypt Has Secured A Place On A Major Streaming Chart
Gerard Butler’s 2016 fantasy-action movie Gods of Egypt is now doing well on a major Netflix chart. The movie, which takes place in the world of Egyptian mythology, follows the mortal Bek (Brenton Thwaites) finding himself in the middle of a battle between the gods.
The movie, which was directed by Alex Proyas (The Crow), also starred Gerard Butler as Set, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Horus, Geoffrey Rush as Ra, Bryan Brown as Osiris, Rufus Sewell as Urshu, and Chadwick Boseman as Thoth. Ahead of its release, the movie was heavily criticized for whitewashing the majority of its Egyptian characters.
In addition to the Gods of Egypt casting controversy, the movie was a failure critically and commercially. In addition to earning a dismal 15% score with an audience score of 37% on the platform’s Popcornmeter, it was a box office bomb, grossing just $150.6 million against its sizable reported budget of $140 million.
After arriving on the streaming platform on August 7, Gods of Egypt has been trending on the daily Netflix chart of their Top 10 most-watched movies in the United States. It first appeared at No. 9 on August 9, rising to No. 4 the following day before spending two consecutive days and eventually settling at No. 6 as of August 14.
At the time of writing, the only movies above Gods of Egypt on the U.S. chart are considerably newer тιтles, including the Netflix originals Fixed (No. 5), Happy Gilmore 2 (No. 3), and KPop Demon Hunters (No. 1), the 2022 rom-com Marry Me, and the 2023 action-thriller Kandahar, which also stars Gerard Butler.
What This Means For Gods of Egypt
The fact that both Gods of Egypt and Kandahar are surging on the Netflix chart in the U.S. is likely a result of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon remake becoming a major hit this summer. It is the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year so far with a worldwide haul of $623.7 million.
In that movie, Gerard Butler reprised his role as the Viking chieftain Stoick the Vast, which seems to have reignited interest in his previous action and fantasy тιтles, even the ones that were initially disregarded at the time when they were originally released. Whether this results in an improvement of Gods of Egypt‘s Popcornmeter score remains to be seen.
