F1 The Movie has sped past a major global box office milestone. The movie, which was directed by Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski and sH๏τ on actual Formula 1 racetracks, stars Brad Pitt as retired driver Sonny Hayes, who returns to Formula 1 to partner with young H๏τsH๏τ Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris).
The F1 The Movie release kicked off on June 27 with a $57.1 million debut, premiering at No. 1 at the domestic box office, far above the $10.2 million earned by its fellow new release, M3GAN 2.0. While F1 was bumped to No. 2 by Jurᴀssic World Rebirth the following weekend, it quickly rose to become Apple Studios’ highest-grossing theatrical release ever.
Warner Bros. Discovery now reports that F1 The Movie has brought in an additional $1.8 million on Tuesday, August 12 from 77 international markets. This pushes its cumulative international gross to $396.1 million, reaching a huge global haul of $575.6 million. It has accomplished this feat after less than two full months in theaters.
This total makes F1 The Movie only the eighth movie of the year to pᴀss the $575 million global milestone, behind Superman, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, How to Train Your Dragon, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth, A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Sтιтch, and Ne Zha II.
What This Means For F1 The Movie
Before hitting this huge global milestone, F1 The Movie had already become the highest-grossing movie starring Brad Pitt by surpᴀssing the $540.4 million haul of 2013’s World War Z. Additionally, it is the second highest-grossing movie to feature Brad Pitt in any capacity, only being outstripped by the $734.5 million superhero movie ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool 2, in which he had a cameo.
F1 has now pulled out even further ahead of all the previous Brad Pitt movies by hitting the $575 million milestone. In addition to having earned almost exactly $35 million more than World War Z, it is a whopping $89.5 million above his next highest-grossing movie, 2005’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith ($486.1 million).
Our Take On The F1 The Movie Box Office Milestone
The reported budget of F1 The Movie ranges between $200 and $300 million, which could place its estimated theatrical break-even point somewhere between $500 and $750 million. However, Apple Studios does not rely on theatrical revenue to sustain their theatrical releases, primarily using them to build brand recognition and promote their movies’ Apple TV+ streaming runs.
Therefore, the fact that F1 The Movie has actually landed somewhere within that range, even at the lower end, is an outstanding achievement for the young studio.
