Sofia Coppola’s New 97% Coming-of-Age Drama Sets Theatrical Release Date

The based-on-a-true-story movie Fairyland has now scored its theatrical release date. The movie is produced by Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola, who has directed projects such as Lost in Translation and Priscilla. This time, Coppola takes a higher-level role, with Andrew Durham writing and directing Fairyland.

The movie is based on the memoir by Alysia Abbott. Set in San Francisco in the 1970s and ’80s, Fairyland is a coming-of-age story centered around a father and daughter whose relationship evolves during the AIDS crisis. The film’s cast includes Emilia Jones, Cody Fern, Scoot McNairy, Adam Lambert, Bella Murphy, Maria Bakalova, Geena Davis, and Nessa Dougherty.

As per Variety, Fairyland has officially set its release date, debuting in theaters on Oct. 10, 2025. It will be co-distributed by Lionsgate and WILLA. The full release details, including how many theaters Fairyland will come to, have not been specified.

What This Means For Fairyland

Fairyland is set to come out at a pretty busy time in theaters. Oct. 10 kicks off a holiday weekend, and there are some other major releases planned. The date marks the release of the much-hyped legacy sequel Tron: Ares, as well as the more high-minded After the Hunt and If I Had Legs I’d Kick You.

These latter two тιтles will be in direct compeтιтion with Fairyland. The Coppola-produced film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023, where it got a strong response. The same can be said, however, about If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, which also got good reviews out of Sundance this year.

That said, Fairyland has a decent sH๏τ at getting some traction in its early days in theaters. At the time of writing, its aggregated reviews have given it a 97% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant‘s Mae Abdulbaki reviewed Fairyland and gave the film 7 out of 10 stars, praising the lead performances.

It has been a long time coming for Fairyland to finally get wider distribution after its festival premiere over two years ago. As such, the creative team is going to be hoping for their big chance to get broader critical acclaim and gain a more significant audience through this platform.

The Coppola connection is another point in Fairyland‘s favor, although without her directing or writing, the tie might not be as strong. Nonetheless, the film has an intriguing premise and a strong start with its festival reviews, which could lead Fairyland to success by the time it releases in theaters this October.
