A crime thriller with 92% on Rotten Tomatoes that features a script written by Taylor Sheridan will be leaving Netflix in the very near future. Sheridan will be best known to many viewers for creating the Yellowstone universe, as well as shows like Tulsa King, Lioness, Landman, and Mayor of Kingstown.
Sheridan, however, also has an impressive resume outside the world of TV, having written a number of popular movies. He wrote Without Remorse (2021), Those Who Wish Me ᴅᴇᴀᴅ (2021), Wind River (2017), which he also directed, and Hell or High Water (2016). One of the most notable films he scripted, though, remains 2015’s Sicario.
Per confirmation from the streamer, Sicario now only has a limited amount of time left on Netflix, with August 31 set to be the last day it will be available to subscribers. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the movie remains one of the most acclaimed of both filmmakers’ careers, and it’s not yet clear where it will end up next.
What This Means For Sicario
In addition to earning acclaim from critics, Sicario was also a success with audiences, and it currently sports a strong 85% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie grossed a modest $84 million but was nominated for three Oscars, and the response was enough to get a sequel, subтιтled Day of the Soldado, off the ground in 2018.
Though the sequel was generally well received, the original remains the more highly regarded entry. Starring Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin, and Benicio del Toro, the Sicario story follows an idealistic FBI agent as she joins an elite task force that blurs the lines between legal and illegal.
The film’s acclaim means its departure from Netflix could come as a blow to subscribers, but there are still several weeks left to watch it for those looking to revisit it before it’s gone. As of writing, Day of the Soldado isn’t available on any streaming service in the U.S., and it’s not known if Sicario will also fall into this streaming limbo.
While questions remain about the streaming availability of the first two movies, Brolin recently provided a positive update on the long-gestating Sicario 3. While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor said that the third movie is “very, very real,” meaning more of the franchise could be on the way.
Our Take On Sicario Leaving Netflix
With the recent buzz about a third movie coming to fruition, it seems likely that Sicario won’t experience very much streaming downtime. Though the sequel wasn’t quite able to recapture the magic of the first installment, the Day of the Soldado ending does pave the way for more story, and it would be exciting to see Blunt back as Kate Macer.
The combination of Villeneuve directing and Sheridan writing is part of what made Sicario work so well, and Villeneuve’s absence was felt in the follow-up. Hopefully, the potential third installment in the Sicario franchise reunites the pair. In any case, Brolin’s comments about the new movie make now a perfect time to rewatch the first installment on Netflix before it leaves.
