Warner Bros. Becomes The First Studio In History To Set This Big Box Office Record

Warner Bros. has set a monumental box office record as a studio, with Weapons marking its latest popular release. Opening on Aug. 8, the horror grossed $42 million at the opening weekend box office and became the latest movie from the studio to cross an important threshold. In addition to this great start, Zack Cregger’s new horror flick has gone viral on social media, receiving strong reactions from moviegoers.

Following this year’s release of Sinners, Minecraft, F1: The Movie, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Superman, and Weapons, Warner Bros. has become the first studio in history to have six consecutive films earning more than $40 million at the opening box office. Additionally, out of these six movies, half are entirely original stories.

What This Means For Warner Bros.

Similar to Weapons, Warner Bros. has seen overall success with its other five 2025 entries, especially the original тιтles, which shows promise and a rising interest in new content. Ryan Coogler’s Sinners became the highest-grossing original movie since Coco, crossing the $200 million domestic box office milestone. It also surpᴀssed Jaws as the second-highest-grossing horror movie at the domestic box office.

Sinners was the first original movie to top the box office this year, and Zack Cregger’s highly-rated horror flick has followed in its footsteps. Aside from these two, F1: The Movie also achieved a high level of success. Having grossed over $570 million, the sports drama became Brad Pitt’s highest-grossing movie of all time and the eighth top-earning movie released this year.

Our Take On Warner Bros.’ Box Office Achievement

Warner Bros. is currently the leading studio at the box office, with its six most recent movies breaking records on various levels. Based on the popular video game of the same name, A Minecraft Movie also had a record-breaking opening, totaling $313.2 million worldwide during the first weekend. The movie ended its theatrical run with $950 million global earnings.

Meanwhile, the sixth installment of Final Destination became the highest-grossing entry in the franchise and has led to the development of a seventh movie. James Gunn’s 2025 Superman recently pᴀssed $569 million at the global box office, marking a strong start for DCU’s new slate.

Sony, the studio behind the recent I Know What You Did Last Summer, Karate Kid: Legends, and 28 Years Later, in comparison, is focusing more on legacy sequels. Disney, with Lilo & Sтιтch, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Snow White, and Elio, has seen uneven performances at the box office. While the Warner Bros. adaptations and reboots have certainly been high earners, this milestone represents new hope for original content.
