Jurᴀssic World Rebirth has instantly become a number one hit on VOD following its digital release. Hailing from director Gareth Edwards, the latest installment in the long-running Jurᴀssic Park franchise stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, the leader of an expedition into dangerous territory to recover dinosaur DNA for a medical breakthrough.
In addition to Johansson, the Jurᴀssic World Rebirth cast includes Jonathan Bailey, Rupert Friend, Mahershala Ali, Luna Blaise, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, among others. After hitting theaters in early July, the film launched on VOD on August 5.
Per iTopChart, Rebirth is currently the top rental choice on iTunes as of August 9. 28 Years Later (2025) occupies second place with Alien: Romulus (2024) coming in third. Rounding out the top five are Thunderbolts (2025) and Materialists (2025).
What This Means For Jurᴀssic World Rebirth
Jurᴀssic World Rebirth reviews have been mixed from critics, with some criticizing the movie for its over-familiarity and lack of risk-taking. This has resulted in a lackluster Rotten Tomatoes score of 50%.
With audiences, however, the new Jurᴀssic Park franchise installment is faring better. The Popcornmeter score is a more respectable 71%, indicating more widespread acceptance among general moviegoers. At the box office, Rebirth has grossed $779 million, meaning it’s well into the realm of profitability on its estimated $180 million budget.
A general rule of thumb for Hollywood blockbusters is that they need to gross around two-and-a-half times their budget in order to break even.
While Rebirth has been a success, it’s worth noting that it will fall well short of its predecessor, Jurᴀssic World Dominion (2022), which ended its box office run with just over $1 billion. Before that, Jurᴀssic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) grossed $1.3 billion and Jurᴀssic World (2015) grossed $1.6 billion.
This clear downward trend could paint a worrying picture for the franchise’s future. Rebirth‘s success on VOD is a promising sign that audience interest remains relatively high, but it’s also not too surprising given it only just released on digital last week. A key indicator here will be whether the film remains a top performer in the weeks and months ahead.
Our Take On Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s VOD Success
It’s not clear what’s next for the franchise after the Jurᴀssic World Rebirth ending. Another film is essentially a guarantee, but there’s been no word yet on whether Edwards will return and whether it will be a new story or if characters like Zora will make a comeback.
The more lukewarm response to Rebirth suggests it might not be the movie that should serve as the foundation for a new trilogy, but there is certainly a case to be made that these movies need returning human characters for audiences to latch onto. While the franchise’s future remains up in the air, viewers are evidently enjoying watching Jurᴀssic World Rebirth at home.
