Taron Egerton Sang The Same Iconic Song In Two Totally Different Movies

Taron Egerton has proven that he can sing as well as he can act, and he actually sang the same iconic song in two different movies. Egerton got his start in stage plays before he earned his breakout role in Kingsman: The Secret Service. Egerton has since appeared in several movies over his career, including two musical films.

In 2016, Egerton had the chance to voice one of the main characters from the Sing franchise. He voiced Johnny, the teenage gorilla who wants to be a singer and pianist. He then received award recognition for his portrayal of Elton John in the 2019 biopic Rocketman. Ironically, he sang the same songs in both movies.

Taron Egerton Sang “I’m Still Standing” As Elton John In Rocketman

Taron Egerton starred as musical icon Elton John in the 2019 biopic, Rocketman. The film received positive reviews, with Egerton especially praised, and it included some of John’s most beloved songs. To his credit, Egerton learned how to play the piano and sing so he could do everything in his role.

Egerton surprised audiences by singing most of Elton John’s songs in the movie rather than using John’s original tracks with the actor lip-syncing. In the film, Egerton sang everything from “Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting),” “Your Song,” “Tony Dancer,” “Rocket Man,” and “I’m Still Standing.”

In Rocketman, Taron Egerton sang “I’m Still Standing” upon leaving rehab, demonstrating that he had regained control of his life. This was one of the last songs in the movie, and it was followed by the news that John had been sober for 28 years. Egerton went on to win Best Actor at the Golden Globes.

Taron Egerton Also Recorded “I’m Still Standing” For Sing

This wasn’t the first time that Taron Egerton sang the Elton John song, “I’m Still Standing” in a movie. Three years earlier, Egerton sang the song in the animated film Sing. In that movie, Egerton plays Johnny the Gorilla, a teenager who wants to be a singer rather than follow his family’s legacy as criminals.

Egerton was one of several actors to sing in the animated musical, along with Tori Kelly, Seth MacFarlane, and Scarlett Johansson. Egerton sang the Zombies’ “The Way I Feel Inside” and Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing” in the first movie. Egerton’s biggest track in Sing 2 was Coldplay’s “A Sky Full of Stars.”

For “I’m Still Standing,” Johnny performed the song while playing the piano at the big show. That moment led to his dad breaking out of jail to share the moment with his son. The performance in Sing was much more polished than the rougher version from Rocketman, which showed John as he had just written and recorded it.

Sing went on to earn a Golden Globe nomination for Best Animated Feature, and Jojo Villanueva won a Hollywood Music in Media Award for Outstanding Music Supervision – Film. As for Taron Egerton, he proved more than capable of singing the same iconic song in two different versions and delivering great performances both times.
