Freaky Friday is topping a major streaming chart. The 2003 comedy is an adaptation of the 1972 Mary Rodgers novel of the same name and stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan as Tess and Anna Coleman, a mother and her teen daughter who swap bodies and learn a lesson about walking a mile in one another’s shoes.
The 2025 sequel Freakier Friday, which debuted on August 8, sees Tess and Anna swapping bodies with Anna’s daughter Harper (Julia ʙuттers) and her soon-to-be stepdaughter Lily (Sophia Hammons) ahead of Anna’s wedding to Lily’s father Eric (Manny Jacinto). The movie holds a Certified Fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 73%.
Also on August 8, Freaky Friday finally surged to the top of Disney+‘s chart of the most-watched тιтles on the streaming platform in the United States, a chart which includes both movies and television series. The 2003 comedy spent the week beforehand bouncing between No. 2 and No. 4 on the chart.
However, it now stands at No. 1 above тιтles including new Marvel Cinematic Universe projects Captain America: Brave New World (No. 10) and Eyes of Wakanda (No. 5), as well as Lindsay Lohan’s 1998 comedy The Parent Trap (No. 8).
What This Means For Freaky Friday
The movie that reunites the Freaky Friday cast has taken a bit longer to top the chart in the United States than it has in other territories that have Disney+. In nearly every other territory in which the movie was No. 1 on Disney+ on August 8, it had already climbed to the top of the chart between one and four days earlier.
The only exception is Australia, which also saw the movie surge to No. 1 on August 8, though Freakier Friday premiered on August 7 in that territory. However, in that region, the movie had a much smoother rise up the chart, going from No. 9 to No. 4, No. 3, No. 2, and eventually No. 1.
Our Take On The Freaky Friday Streaming Surge
Regardless of its sluggish rise to the top, the original Freaky Friday has been charting consistently on Disney+ across the world during the week leading up to 2025’s Freakier Friday. This shows that there is likely a sizable audience waiting in the wings for the legacy sequel.
However, it remains to be seen if Freaky Friday‘s streaming success translates to Freakier Friday ticket sales. The sequel may debut at No. 2 below the R-rated horror movie Weapons, which is unusual for a PG comedy with a broader potential audience. This streaming success may show that the sequel will have a robust at-home audience rather than a theatrical one.
