James Gunn’s Superman Box Office Hits Crucial Global Milestone In Less Than One Month

James Gunn’s Superman movie is continuing to become a win for DC Studios as the DC Universe movie crosses a major milestone at the worldwide box office. 2025 marked the year for the Man of Steel’s return to the world of cinema, as David Corenswet became the latest star to bring the DC icon back to the big screen.

From the new take on some of DC’s most iconic heroes and villains to the many DC Easter eggs and references in Superman, the Man of Tomorrow has begun a new era for the DC brand, as DC Studios is getting ready to expand the DCU with more movies and TV shows in the works. With many still following the Superman box office numbers, the DCU movie has reached another milestone.

As of August 6, 2025, Superman has now reached $555 million at the worldwide box office, collecting an additional $1.7 million from 78 overseas markets. The film’s international box office numbers are currently sitting at $237.1 million, which is only barely a month after Superman’s theatrical release.

What The Superman Box Office Update Means

With the latest box office update, Gunn’s 2025 installment has outgrossed all of Christopher Reeve’s Superman movies, as well as Superman Returns from 2006. Domestically, Superman has beaten 2013’s Man of Steel, since the domestic box office numbers for Zack Snyder’s movie are unadjusted for inflation, while worldwide, the Henry Cavill-starring installment is most likely going to remain victorious against Corenswet’s film.

However, it’s crucial to take into account that, despite Superman’s worldwide box office hit, the DCU installment is still struggling with its international numbers. As Gunn has previously stated, the international audience members are not engaging with the Superman movie as much, in light of “anti-American sentiment” in the current political climate.

The industry standard for breakeven point is that the box office is 2.5x the budget.

As much as Superman has become a commercial hit domestically, time will tell how future Superman and even DCU installments will do internationally. There is always the chance that the 2025 movie will start building a better connection globally for future releases. Nevertheless, Superman is definitely emerging as a victor for DC Studios, and it’s one that they needed for the DCU.

Following its latest box office update, it’s looking brighter than ever for Superman to be 2025’s most profitable superhero movie, even The Fantastic Four: First Steps. By the time Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps have finished their run, Gunn’s film will more than likely be the winner.

2025 would also mean that it’s the first time since 2008 that DC has become the top grosser against Marvel at the worldwide box office, as the MCU also had Thunderbolts* and Captain America: Brave New World released earlier this year. From good word of mouth to the glowing Superman movie reviews, the DCU can only go up from here.
