Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars Movie Casts Villain Role With House Of The Dragon Star

Matt Smith is confirmed to be joining Ryan Gosling in the upcoming movie, Star Wars: Starfighter. Excitement is building for Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter, an upcoming Star Wars movie set five years after the sequel trilogy. It’s due to start production later this year, with Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth in starring roles.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅline has revealed that Matt Smith, of Doctor Who and House of the Dragon fame, is joining the movie in a villain role. He will presumably be playing alongside horror star Mia Goth, who has already been confirmed as the movie’s second villain. They’ll be going up against Gosling, who is presumably the тιтular “starfighter” pilot.

Matt Smith Has Been Trying To Get Into Star Wars For Years

Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor in Doctor Who

Matt Smith has become one of Hollywood’s H๏τtest properties in the years since he left Doctor Who, his reputation growing due to his electrifying performance in House of the Dragon. But Smith has been trying to get into Star Wars for years; he was originally cast in a (reportedly significant) role for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Smith eventually revealed that he had several meetings about joining the franchise, but that his character was rendered “obsolete” during rewrites. No details have ever been provided, but it looks as though Smith will get to journey into this galaxy far, far away after all.

Starfighter Is Gathering An All-Star Cast

Starfighter is definitely an unusual project, depending on star casting in a very different way to most Lucasfilm projects. To be fair, this does make sense; the success of Openheimer and Sinners has led to some commentators suggesting we’re moving into a post-franchise era, and Lucasfilm would be wise to focus on star talent in such an environment.

Smith has shown his sheer range on both Doctor Who and House of the Dragon, and there can be no doubt his performances alongside Mia Goth will be fantastic. She’s known for her fantastic performances of complex, twisted and sinister villains, and Smith can easily match her in darkness and sophistication.

Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy recently confirmed that Starfighter will begin production in the U.K. in September. That means we’d ᴀssumed there would be casting announcements this month, in the run-up to filming. Nobody had expected such a celebrated name as Matt Smith, though; this particular Star Wars movie keeps getting better and better.
