It’s been another great year for horror, with Ryan Coogler’s Sinners standing as a shining example of what the genre is capable of. With its blend of psychological tension, social commentary, supernatural dread, and killer score, the film has become a full-blown cultural phenomenon that made $365 million at the box office and has sparked serious Oscar buzz, incredibly rare for a horror film.
Franchise entries like Final Destination: Bloodlines and 28 Years Later have also delivered, proving there’s still room for innovation within established horror worlds. Meanwhile, A24’s Bring Her Back, from Danny and Michael Philippou, and The Monkey, written and directed by Osgood Perkins based on Stephen King’s short story, also stand as examples of strong auteur-driven horror.
Weapons, from Barbarian director Zach Cregger, releases in theaters on August 8 and promises to be one of the best horror movies of 2025, and another strong auteur-driven тιтle for the genre. However, it’s another new horror movie that’s being praised by the King of horror himself.
Stephen King Praises Together
Stephen King shares a positive review for Together. Written and directed by Michael Shanks in his feature debut, the new body horror movie stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie, who are married in real life, as a couple who relocate to the countryside and encounter a strange supernatural force that begins to alter their bodies in increasingly terrifying ways.
In addition to Franco and Brie in the lead roles, the cast also includes Damon Herriman, Mia Morrissey, Jack Kenny, Sunny S. Walia, Karl Richmond, Tom Considine, Melanie Beddie, and Sarah Lang.
On Threads, Stephen King shared a glowing review for Together. The author offered praise for Franco and Brie’s performances, calling them “great” and “brave.” King says that the movie succeeds because it makes you care about the characters, which is essential for good horror, and Together pulls this off effectively. King’s post, as seen above, reads, “Dave Franco and Alison Brie are great–and brave–in TOGETHER. Horror movies work when you care about the people. This one works.”
What This Means For Together
King is far from the only one praising Together. The movie premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival in January, where Together received rave reviews praising its self-aware casting of Franco and Brie, which adds a layer of authenticity, ultimately delivering a body horror film that’s as emotionally gripping as it is disturbingly unforgettable.
However, Together was released in theaters on July 31 and has yet to translate its buzz into box office numbers, making just $11.2 million against its $17 million budget. Perhaps King’s positive review could provide the boost that Together needs to turn in a strong second weekend.
Together is showing in theaters.
