Timothée Chalamet & A Complete Unknown Director Reteaming For A New Heist Movie, & It’s Stirring Buzz

Timothée Chalamet and A Complete Unknown director James Mangold are reteaming for a new motocross heist movie, High Side, and it’s stirring buzz. The actor and director first collaborated on the acclaimed musical biopic with Chalamet starring as Bob Dylan, following the folk singer’s beginnings in 1961 to his groundbreaking and divisive electric performance at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965.

A Complete Unknown received rave reviews, was widely regarded as one of the best movies of 2024, and received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Chalamet, Best Director for Mangold, Best Supporting Actor for Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, and Best Supporting Actress for Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez.

Now, according to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Chalamet and Mangold are reportedly reteaming for High Side, based on an unpublished short story by Jaime Oliveira. The report specifies that High Sidelooms as a potential reteam” for Chalamet and Mangold, so it doesn’t seem like a done deal quite yet.

Chernin Entertainment is on board as a producer, while Sugar23, Oliveira’s representation, is shopping the pitch package around Hollywood, generating interest both in the industry and among publishers.

Chalamet is currently filming Dune: Part Three with Marty Supreme, the table tennis drama directed by Josh Safdie, set to release this December through A24.

What This Means For High Side

High Side follows Billy, a former MotoGP racer, as he tries to escape his past, haunted by a career-ending crash and his family’s troubled legacy. Struggling to move on, he works in his family’s garage while caring for his father. But when his estranged brother Cole returns after their father’s death, Billy is pulled back into a world of high-speed risks.

Cole, already on the FBI’s radar, convinces Billy to use his exceptional motocross skills and join a string of bank heists on superbikes. They gather a ragtag crew, including a woman who quickly becomes Billy’s lover, and start hitting small desert banks with speed and precision. Their success emboldens them, and they set their sights on even bigger and riskier targets.

Their exploits grow bolder as the team plans a final bank heist synchronized with a major motorcycle parade. Meanwhile, Lennox, an FBI agent carrying a personal grudge against Cole, closes in on the crew, leading to a thrilling climax filled with intense action and dramatic twists.

Our Take On High Side

After a musical biopic about the rise of Bob Dylan, Timothée Chalamet and James Mangold’s next movie will be much different – a fast-paced heist movie set on superbikes. Mangold is a great action director, having already directed high-octane racing in Ford v Ferrari. However, High Side will be the first full-fledged action film for Timothée Chalamet, who has mostly opted for dramas.

After A Complete Unknown, High Side promises to shift gears entirely for Chalamet and Mangold. With high-speed chases, emotional stakes, and brotherly tension at its core, the movie could mark a bold turn for both actor and director. Chalamet and Mangold trading acoustic ballads for superbike heists? That’s a ride I’m ready to take.
