Together Ending’s Full Circle Moment Almost Didn’t Happen: “It Was A Bit Scary For A While”

One of Together‘s key team members explains how the movie achieved one of its best full-circle moments. Directed by Michael Shanks, the movie is a horror film about a couple, Tim and Millie, who leave their city life to move to the countryside so that Millie can pursue a new teaching job. Things do not go as smoothly as planned.

The film stars real-life married couple, Dave Franco and Alison Brie, in the lead roles. The film also features a supporting cast including Damon Herriman, Mia Morrissey, Karl Richmond, Jack Kenny, and Francesca Waters. Together is receiving relatively strong reviews thus far.

In an interview with ScreenRant, Together composer Cornel Wilczek explains how Together managed to get the song “2 Become 1” by the Spice Girls. Wilczek revealed that the song was used in the script, and noted that the Spice Girls were “really big in Australia.”

Wilczek also explained that the reason that “2 Become 1” only played over part of the ending sequence was due to the cost, because it “gets really expensive” to include entire songs. But he was ultimately grateful that the piece got included at all. Check out the full quote from Wilczek below:

ScreenRant: Do you know how they got the Spice Girls song? I imagine that must’ve been in the script, but I am surprised that they were allowed to use that.

Cornel Wilczek: I can’t answer that because that conversation wasn’t with me. But it was a little bit scary for a while because I think they were all kind of asking, “What kind of film is this?”

The producers can tell a bit more of that, but it was dicey because it was written into the script, and Spice Girls was, I mean, probably big everywhere, but really big in Australia. And that reference alone was like, “Oh yeah.” I was concerned that it wasn’t American enough, but I didn’t realize how big it was over there as well.

ScreenRant: Oh yeah, we love it.

Cornel Wilczek: So yeah, there were some dicey moments, but hey, it was a good move for letting that be licensed.

ScreenRant: Your cue, which is probably the biggest cue of the movie in terms of volume and stuff… you go straight from that song into [your music.] How did that come together?

Cornel Wilczek: I would like to say everything was planned perfectly well, but actually a lot of it came from necessity. Clearly, [it] would’ve made sense to have [“2 Become 1”] song over the whole sequence, but that gets really expensive.

ScreenRant: Really? That’s why?

Cornel Wilczek: Well, yeah, absolutely. This is not a big budget film … so it’s like, ‘This song is going to have to end around about here.” And we played with that in a few different ways, and I lined up a bit and said, “Ooh, could we get this scene recut so perhaps the needle drops here?” And we had to play around a lot with that.

But I, very early on, before I got the edit, thought that this would happen. I just felt like the ritualistic aspect of the film–the cult and the romance and the beautiful merging–had to be a very strong and major thing. I thought it had to be in there, so that was actually one of the first cues that I wrote, not knowing if it was going to be used.

I didn’t share it with anyone, and I was a little bit worried to share it with people, because was quite different to the Spice Girls. I thought, “No one’s going to like this. It’s not going to happen,” but I’m really glad it went there because I think it gives it a sense of purpose. And there is something in the ecstasy and the beauty of this, even though it’s violent and a wall of sound and noisy, because it’s a violent merging of bodies. You don’t want to steer away from that, [but] at the same time, if it was negative, then why are we celebrating this? There had to be something else in it.

They decided to make this happen, and I think that’s the thing that everybody that is in a relationship and enjoyed the film identifies with.

What This Meant For Together

Dave Franco and Alison Brie in Together

The Spice Girls are a key throughline in Together. When Millie’s best friend (who very much doesn’t believe in the strength of her and Tim’s relationship) asks her about the sweet things Tim has done for her, Millie mentions that he brought her a Spice Girls vinyl on their second date after learning she liked the band.

The Spice Girls then come back into the story when Millie and Tim are at their most connected point possible. That is, when the pair accepts the fate of the curse they’ve been brought under, allowing their bodies to literally fuse together as they become one human being. Accompanied by part of Wilczek’s score, “2 Become 1” also plays.

According to Wilczek’s telling, this was always in the vision for the movie. The producing and legal team fought to get even part of the song included. This eventually came through, and Together‘s ending was able to truly craft a full-circle moment for its two main characters.

Our Take On The Song In Together

Dave Franco and Alison Brie uncomfortably close together in Together

As a United States audience member, I too can á´€ssuage Wilczek’s fears about the Spice Girls moment not translating as well in the United States. The song is perfect for the scene, adding a sense of humor while also imbuing something that is important to the characters.

Given the pair’s history with the music group, it also acts as an interesting way to trace the theme about Tim and Millie holding on to any sense of connection they have. Now the duo will be together, forever, but in order to get to that point, the Together couple has to accept their bond for what it is.
